The design for the 9/11 Memorial was selected through the largest open competition in history. The final design, “Reflecting Absence” — created by architects Michael Arad and Peter Walker — transformed Ground Zero with two massive waterfalls where the Twin Towers once stood. Surrounding the eight-acre plaza are 400 white oak trees — and one charred Callery pear tree recovered from the ruins. Known as the "Survivor Tree," it stands as a lasting symbol of New York City's resilience and strength.
