The Future of StoryTelling (FoST) is a passionate community of people from the worlds of media, technology, and communications who are exploring how storytelling is evolving in the digital age. At the heart of FoST are two signature events. The two-day, invitation-only FoST Summit gathers top thinkers and practitioners from diverse fields to share ideas and experiences shaping the storytelling landscape. FoST FEST, open to the public, features VR and AR experiences, tech demos, a multiperson VR theater, panel conversations, live performances, interactive games, and much more. In addition to the Summit and FEST, FoST also produces a wide range of content and programming, such as curated exhibitions; an annual series of short films; regular influencer salons, tech tastings, and storytelling workshops; and a popular blog and other social media content aimed at FoST’s network of over half a million enthusiastic followers. Join the conversation!

The Lonely Burden of Today’s Teenage Girls

"In conversation after conversation, adolescent girls describe themselves as particularly vulnerable to the banes of our increasingly digital culture, with many of them struggling to manage the constant connectedness of social media, their rising levels of anxiety and the intense emotions that have always been central to adolescence."

http://ow.ly/26Ss50xxOol

Amid our huge, unplanned experiment with social media, new research suggests that many American adolescents are becoming more anxious, depressed and solitary.

How to Save a Dying Language

"By the time Hawaii became a state, in 1959, the Hawaiian language had lost a critical mass of native speakers. Other indigenous languages were undergoing their own protracted deaths—roughly 230 of them went extinct at some point between 1950 and 2010. In the ’60s, estimates suggest that fewer than 2,000 people could speak Hawaiian fluently, and just a few dozen of them were children."

The Hawaiian language nearly went extinct. Now it’s being taught in dozens of immersion schools.

Breaking Down the 2020 Golden Globe Nominations

"Netflix is due for a big year as it strives to establish legitimacy as a prestige powerhouse, while conversations about the lack of racial and gender diversity among the major players will likely rear up again in the coming weeks."

Netflix got plenty of attention for films with old-fashioned marquee appeal, while female directors and actors of color were largely overlooked.

D. Fox Harrell, Professor of Digital Media at MIT and FoST 2017 speaker, has discovered that the human biases that shape our society are replicated--and sometimes intensified--in the virtual world. In this #FoSTFilm Harrell discusses how the lines between the digital and physical have become blurred, and how the lack of nuance in digital media can lead to damaging behaviors and stereotypes.

Artificial intelligence won’t kill journalism or save it, but the sooner newsrooms buy in, the better

"Right now, newsrooms mostly use AI in three areas: news gathering, production, and distribution. Of those surveyed, only 37 percent have an active AI strategy."

Machine learning has revealed exactly how much of a Shakespeare play was written by someone else

Petr Plecháč at the Czech Academy of Sciences in Prague has solved this literary mystery using machine learning to identify the authorship of more or less every line of the play.

http://ow.ly/WqSr50xkiHt

Literary analysts have long noticed the hand of another author in Shakespeare’s Henry VIII. Now a neural network has identified the specific scenes in question—and who actually wrote them.
