Ever wonder where the insects go in the winter? This Bug Addict found out!

Yesterday was really cold in central New Jersey but any day doing fieldwork is better than a day in the office! The days of many insects on the wing are long over so I'm switching gears a bit and still finding lots of cool insects to tide me over. Cocoons and overwintering insects are the targets now and I guess will be for quite some time. When I lifted a log yesterday it was filled with these beautiful metallic green Sweat bees (I'm pretty sure these are Augochlora pura but if not and anyone has a different ID please let me know!) hibernating beneath the bark in small tunnels. These are pretty common in my area under bark in rotting logs and always a pleasure to find.

A Halloween Without Bats?? Now THAT's Scary!

No bats, no chocolate. How's that for a nightmare?

It's that spoooooky time of year again. The crooked grins of carved pumpkins. Little zombies on the prowl for fresh flesh. And bats flapping their wings across the face of a full moon.
