In March of this year, #NewYorkCity's single-use #PlasticBagBan went into effect. Other cities like #LosAngeles, also, have similar bans. So what to do when you need to grab something at the store? What is #Windrush?

After WWII, Britain began the arduous process of rebuilding its society, battered by years of war. To help with the reconstruction, Britain invited workers to come, mostly from the Caribbean. The term "Windrush Generation" refers to the migrants that came to Britain from 1948 - 1973, to help with reconstruction. The term comes from the "Empire Windrush" the ship that brought the first immigrants to Britain from the West Indies. It is important to note that these migrants were British subjects, since they were coming from countries like Jamaica and other Caribbean nations that were under the British crown. As British subjects, they would not need any papers to move to Britain. (This would be like someone moving to the mainland United States who was born in Puerto Rico or Guam, both American territories. Also, Jamaica did not gain independence from the United Kingdom until 1962. Moreover, many countries like Canada and Australia are still part of the British Commonwealth, even thought they are recognized as independent nations with their own Prime Ministers. Jamaica is, also, still part of the Commonwealth, as are other islands of the Caribbean. "Until a new immigration law came into force in 1973, Commonwealth citizens and their children had the automatic right to live and work in the UK.")

From CNN: "In late 2017, however, a raft of cases were reported in which individuals who had arrived in the UK from Commonwealth countries before 1973, and sometimes their descendants, were struggling to prove their citizenship status under tough new immigration laws billed as a 'hostile environment' policy." In other words, they didn't have documentation of citizenship, but those who entered Britain prior to 1973 would never have been required to have any such documentation. As a result, many lost their jobs, were denied rights, were denied medical care and other benefits, some were detained, some were threatened with deportation, and some were actually deported. In 2018, then Prime Minister Theresa May issued an apology, and stated that the migrants were still welcome to stay in the country.

Georgia Shows How Serious the Threat of Voter Suppression Will Be This November

Just as in #Wisconsin, we once again see #Voters forced to stand in ridiculously long lines, waiting for hours to #Vote in the middle of a #Pandemic. This time, it was voters in #Georgia who were forced to wait in long lines, which, not surprisingly, were longest in minority and low-income communities. This should, also, surprise no one since Georgia is the state where #StaceyAbrams narrowly "lost" to #BrianKemp in an #election wherein Kemp got to preside over the very race he was in! That race in 2018 was marred by all sorts of #VoterSuppression from polling sites being closed to entire buses of senior citizens being kept from voting by local authorities to absentee ballots being thrown out. In case anyone has forgotten, #VotingIsARight!

#Trump reverses another #Obama Executive Order, this time opening a #MarineSanctuary up for #CommercialFishing.

In case anyone's forgotten, there are #riots in our streets, #2MillionCovid19Cases (and counting), and the worst #unemployment in America since #TheGreatDepression, but Trump thought doing THIS was somehow needed/wanted right now???

#DonaldTrump announced that he will be removing fishing restrictions in the #NortheastCanyons & #SeamountsMarineNationalMonument, opening up 5,000 square miles in the #AtlanticOcean for #CommercialFishing. The order to designate the area a #NationalMonument was signed by #PresidentObama.

Why #Voting matters:

On February 26, 2020, #HR35 passed in the US #HouseOfRepresentatives. H.R.35 is, also, known as the #EmmettTillAntilynchingAct, which would establish a new criminal #CivilRights violation for #lynching. Specifically, a person who conspires to commit certain Civil Rights offenses (e.g., a #HateCrime act) is subject to criminal penalties.

Who was #EmmettTill?

Emmett Till was a 14 year-old boy from #Chicago who visited his family in #Mississippi during the summer of 1955. During the summer, Till, who, being from Chicago, was unfamiliar with the customs and culture of the region, was said to have flirted with and whistled at 21 year-old #CarolynBryant, a married White woman. In a 2008 interview, Bryant admitted that she had exaggerated/embellished her testimony regarding her interaction with Till. Nevertheless, several nights after the encounter between Till and Bryant, Bryant's husband, #RoyBryant, and his half-brother, #JWMilam, kidnapped Till from his great-uncle's house. The pair beat, tortured, and shot Till, then, threw his body into the Tallahatchie River. After Emmett Till's body was recovered, it was returned to Chicago. His mother insisted upon an open-casket viewing and a public funeral, so that the world could know what happened to her son.

Even though a judge ruled Mrs. Bryant's testimony inadmissible, an all-White jury acquitted Roy Bryant and J. W. Milam in September, 1955. A year later, protected by double jeopardy, the pair admitted to killing Till. The brutal murder of Emmett Till ushered in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

So, the Emmett Till Anti-lynching Act was passed in the House with a vote of 410-4. The bill is currently being held up in the #Senate by one #Senator: #RandPaul of #Kentucky. Incidentally, one of the 4 "No" votes in the House was from Representative #ThomasMassie, also, from Kentucky, who claimed the anti-lynching bill would pose a threat to #FreedomOfSpeech. For the record, #Lynching someone is NOT an expression of #FreeSpeech.

Today, on what would have been his 77th birthday, we remember #JamesChaney — fearless #CivilRights worker, organizer, and advocate for democracy. His life demonstrated that we all have an important role to play in advancing the struggle for civil and #VotingRights.

James was born a changemaker. When he was fifteen, his high school suspended him for wearing #NAACP badges to express his support for the trailblazing organization’s equal justice efforts. Years later, he participated in multiple #FreedomRides throughout the deep South and formally joined the #CongressOfRacialEquality (CORE) in Meridian, Mississippi.

The Ku Klux Klan assassinated James, alongside #MichaelSchwerner and #AndrewGoodman, on June 21, 1964. He was only twenty-one years old. The horrible tragedy shook our nation.
