Blog - Music and Memory

For Brian LeBlanc, music has always played a huge role—listening to his mother’s favorite show tunes while she cleaned house on Saturdays, singing in church choirs, playing in bands. But now that Brian lives with Alzheimer’s, his personalized playlist is all the more meaningful—and valuable—as a way to clear the fog when a bout of confusion descends. A popular speaker at conferences who articulates what it feels like to deal with Alzheimer’s on a daily basis, Brian says his music has had a major, positive impact on his ability to manage and enjoy life.

“Climb Every Mountain”: How Brian LeBlanc’s Favorite Music Helps Him to Manage Alzheimer’s Brian LeBlanc says that his favorite music helps to lift the fog of Alzheimer’s. Immersed in fog. That’s how Brian LeBlanc describes his bouts of confusion from Alzheimer’s. “Imagine you’re d...

"When Mr. Jesse is happy to listen, the music really works to calm him down and keep him from roaming as often. This, in turn, creates a calmer work environment for the staff and other residents alike. This is a prime example of what Music & Memory is all about: improving the quality of life for individual residents all the while improving and calming the environment of the entire facility.”

Welcome to Music & Memory Monday at MCHCC! This week’s featured resident is Mr. Jesse A.

“Mr. Jesse is still fairly new to the Music & Memory program. We put him on the program to combat some behavioral issues that included yelling out and roaming around the facility. We thought the music might help him to calm down and help him to be more content. Here is the result:

Seconds before putting on the music, Mr. Jesse was wandering around the facility confused as to where his room was. This can cause a lot of anxiety for Mr. Jesse as well as for other residents. This particular day, he was also yelling out repeatedly and just seemed unsettled. With the music, he instantly calmed down and became quiet. He was completely content listening with his eyes closed for a while. It sort of felt like the whole nursing facility stopped for a moment. The fire had been put out!

When Mr.

Morgan City Health Care Center

"Since coming back to MCHCC, she has been very joyful with no episodes or behaviors. We are feeling confident that thanks to good treatment at the hospital and to our Music & Memory Program, Miss Rita will have a much better quality of life going forward.”

We love starting our week off by seeing Morgan City Health Care Center's Music and Memory Monday updates! Look at Miss Rita rocking away!

Welcome to Music & Memory Monday at MCHCC! This week’s highlighted resident is Miss Rita G.

“Miss Rita is very new to Music & Memory. She was put on the program following a series of depressive episodes and combative behaviors that required hospitalization. Our hope is that the program not only helped her transition more smoothly back into MCHCC (which it did), but that it also contributes to her overall quality of life going forward.

Miss Rita came back from the hospital feeling as good as new, and this was the first time she received her iPod. As you can see, she absolutely loved it! She went from sitting idle in our living room to dancing, mouthing words to the songs, and rolling around with a very contagious smile on her face.

Since coming back to MCHCC, she has been very joyful with no episodes or behaviors. We are feeling confident that thanks to good treatment at the hospital and to our Music & Memory Program, Miss Rita will have a much better quality of life going forward.”

If you have an iPod or MP3 player you would like to donate or want to learn more about the Music & Memory Program, please call Kayla at (985) 384-1726.

"Knowing how music affects me in such a positive way and how it can uplift my moods I believe this is a wonderful program for the Residents of Baptist Housing. Knowing that I can assist these Residents to relive great memories or special times in their lives, and to help pass the time away each day is very rewarding to me and is why I volunteer my time with Baptist Housing."

Friendraiser 2019 - Little help from my friends

We get by with a little help from our friends so here’s a glimpse of the sense of community and love we share at Music & Memory. “With a little help from my friends” : This is from our Friendraser at Foley Gallery on March 27th. Our staff and friends pulled together an impressive impromptu choir.

It was our honor to have recognized long-time administrator Louise Dueno of Cobble Hill Nursing Home in Brooklyn for her enthusiastic loyalty to Music & Memory and law firm White & Case who have generously donated their legal guidance.

Is there anything better than seeing the smiles of people listening to their music?

Welcome to Music & Memory Monday at MCHCC! This week we are providing an update on featured resident, Miss Agnes R. When asked about her progress on the Program, our Music & Memory Coordinator had the following to say:

“Miss Agnes has been part of the Music & Memory Program from the very beginning due to her dementia diagnosis. Miss Agnes has a good long-term memory, but a not-so-great short-term memory. We hoped the music would help her remember more day to day things like who came to visit her and such. In addition, Miss Agnes tends to have a ‘whatever’ kind of mood. She rarely says she had a good day or that she is in a good mood. She’s always feeling ‘like an old lady’ when asked and says, ‘it don’t matter’ when we asked what she wants to do.

Over time, with her music, she has had a more enthusiastic outlook on day-to-day life. She’ll still say things like ‘I guess’ when I ask if she’d like some music, but after an hour or so of listening, she is smiling from ear to ear. If you ask if she’s having a good day without her music, she’ll often say ‘I guess,’ but after listening to her music, she’ll say, ‘Oh yeah!’

Though Miss Agnes is very involved with our facility by participating in activities and, for quite some time, therapy, we thought this was just one more way to benefit her quality of life. In addition, we thought it would be a great way to benefit the quality of interactions she has with those around her. So far, the program has definitely helped to put her in the best of moods as our favorite music does to many of us as well. It keeps her alert and awake, making her more engaged in her conversations with others. Overall, we’d say it has been a huge success for her!”

If you have an iPod or MP3 player you’d like to donate or would like to learn more about the Program, please contact Kayla at (985) 384-1726.

We are so excited to be partnering with Potterhead Running Club! Register today to join Potterheads across the country and "run for the memories!"

"I sometimes find, and I am sure you know the feeling, that I simply have too many thoughts and memories crammed into my mind." -- Albus Dumbledore

Potterhead Running Club is pleased to present our third event of 2019:

💫 The Pensieve 10k! 💫

For this event, we're diving into the mysterious magical object used by Hogwarts headmasters (and Harry, of course) to examine and re-live memories. Legend has it that the founders of Hogwarts found the Pensieve half buried in the ground, and supposedly one of the reasons the school was located in such a remote location. In the dark days leading up to the Second Wizarding War, Albus Dumbledore used the Pensieve to organize his memories about Lord Voldemort. On the final day of that war, Harry used it to learn the truth about what needed to be done to defeat him, once and for all.

Your registration includes this incredible 3" 3-D bowl-shaped medal, custom sublimated ribbon, and the always popular personalized digital bib!

Reliving memories...especially happy ones...can be a very powerful magic.

They train nursing home staff, as well as family caregivers, to create and provide personalized playlists using iPods/MP3 Players to enable those struggling with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories.

General information

Nursing homes and assisted-living facilities are moving from age-appropriate to person-specific music to further improve therapeutic outcomes and quality of life. This approach is especially useful for persons with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. We train nursing home staff and other elder care professionals, as well as family caregivers, how to create and provide personalized playlists using iPods and related digital audio systems that enable those struggling with Alzheimer’s, dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories. By providing access and education, and by creating a network of certified Music & Memory elder care facilities, we aim to make this form of personalized music a standard of care throughout the health care industry.
