Next week! 6/22 at 3PM tune into for Part 2 of “Reading Belladonna: An Archival Expedition,” an ongoing conversation and workshop series discussing segments of early Belladonna* chaplets, this month featuring co-hosts Rachel Levitsky and James Loop with surprise special guests! Full program description below.

_____________

Belladonna* chaplets are short, staple-bound pamphlets of work-in-progress published in editions of 150 to coincide with the Belladonna* reading series, which presents women and q***r authors writing from the aesthetic margins. Begun in 2000, the chaplet series numbers over 280 works at present writing and embodies an ephemeral archive of experimental feminist writing from the last two decades. In this conversation series leading up to our 25th anniversary in 2024, members of the Belladonna* Collaborative will convene periodically to read and discuss a segment of chaplets from the archive, working sequentially, and inviting authors as guests to participate in the discussion whenever possible, in an attempt to engage the emerging historicity of this ongoing, vital, and beloved publishing project.

Thank you for this gorgeous poster! Full workshop description below:

Water is located, tied to place, and water is also everywhere, is everything. In this six week reading and writing group, we will think about water and waterways within desert geographies, particularly the so-called Southwest. What is the history and future of land and water in dry places? What are the life forms at the border, which is also the river? We will attempt to understand rivers/rivering as an action and verb, and water as movement. Amidst ongoing apocalypse(s) and climate catastrophes, as well as demands for material decolonization and abolition, we will hold the strengths of multiplicity, spaciousness, and spilling/excess as a feature of water bodies. What can water teach us about gender, intimacy, collaboration, and collective power?

We will read and web together poets, writers, and artists including Natalie Diaz, Asiya Wadud, Nick Estes, Nikesha Breeze, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, mónica teresa ortiz and Brandon Shimoda. We will also engage with videos, music, manifestos, and short writing experiments.

Mallika Singh is a poet, cook, and facilitator who writes about environment, surveillance, and intimacies. Mallika is from many places and is currently based on Tiwa land in Albuquerque, NM. They spend most of their days farming, frolicking, and weaving relationships in the high desert. Mallika is the author of the chapbook, Retrieval (Wendy's Subway), and is pursuing a certificate in Community Herbalism from the People’s Medicine School.

Readings will be provided as PDFs.

The workshop will be capped at 10 participants.

For the penultimate day of our celebration of the women and non-binary members of CBAW's collective, we spotlight the incredible Christina Olivares!

Christina is the author of NO MAP OF THE EARTH INCLUDES STARS,
winner of the 2014 Marsh Hawk Press Book Prize, and the chaplet INTERRUPT ( Belladonna* Collaborative, 2015). Olivares is the recipient of BRIO Nonfiction and Poetry Grants, a Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Residency, and two Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grants. In 2019, Olivares was an inaugural Asian American Writers Workshop Witness Fellow. Christina's work has been published widely (most recently in Lincoln Center's We Are The Work, in Aster(ix) and in The Rumpus) and has been republished by The Academy of American Poets. Olivares has most recently taught as a visiting professor at the Rutgers University—Newark MFA poetry program and community-based workshops through the Bronx Council on the Arts. She earned her undergraduate degree at Amherst College in interdisciplinary studies in education and her MFA in poetry at CUNY Brooklyn College. She is an educator and administrator, a poverty and prison abolitionist, and a q***r American-Cuban who is proud to be from the Bronx.

Just the other day it was announced that Christina's newest book, FUTURE BOTANIC is forthcoming from Get Fresh Books. Congratulations Christina! Get more details about it in Christina's latest IG post! Sadly, Bookshop is out of Christina's books so we could not add them to our Women's History Month list, but they are available through the links on Christina's website. See links below!

KPI’s been talking for decades about horizontal, sustainable, equitable organizing models. Here’s a throw back to one of them, this from AWP 2015, Minneapolis:
“A conversation that aims to q***r, disrupt, interrupt, explore, and revolutionize the rhetoric, expectations, and notions of literary business as usual. How do we---as writers, artists, activists, publishers, curators, and producers--- engage new forms of working together? How can innovative aesthetic/editorial practices extend into more sustainable and responsible organizing models (collaborative, collective, coalitional, cooperative enterprise)? How do we subvert prevailing notions and operate within the systems that tend to reproduce those forces? Join the magic act with Teresa Carmody, Krystal Languell of Belladonna* Collaborative, TC Tolbert, Annie Guthrie and yours truly, to talk it out.”
