"The Girl from Ipanema" Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto and Stan Getz

Celebrating Birthday of Vocalist ASTRUD GILBERTO
The Story Behind "The Girl From Ipanema"
Astrud Gilberto was just the wife of singing star João Gilberto when she entered a NYC studio in March 1963. João and Jobim were making a record with tenor saxman Stan Getz. The idea of cutting a verse on “Ipanema” in English came up, and Astrud was the only one of the Brazilians who spoke more than phrasebook English. Astrud’s child-like vocal, devoid of
vibrato and singerly mannerisms, was the perfect foil for her husband’s soft bumblebee voice. Jobim tinkled piano. Getz blew a creamy smooth tenor. Four minutes of magic went to tape.

Happy Birthday, Kurt Elling see below for more from Jazz R Us

Happy birthday to jazz vocalist, composer, lyricist and vocalese performer Kurt Elling (born November 2, 1967). Born in Chicago, Illinois, and raised in Rockford, Elling first became interested in music through his father, who was Kapellmeister at a Lutheran church. Growing up, Elling sang in choirs and played various musical instruments, but was not exposed to jazz until he attended Gustavus Adolphus College. Elling enrolled in graduate school at the University of Chicago Divinity School, but left school one credit short of a master's degree to pursue a career as a jazz vocalist.

Elling began to perform around Chicago, s**t singing and improvising his own lyrics. He recorded a demo in the early 1990s and was signed by Blue Note Records, releasing a total of six albums with the label. He has been nominated for ten Grammy Awards, winning Best Vocal Jazz Album for Dedicated to You (2009) on the Concord Jazz label. Elling often leads the Down Beat critics poll, and he was awarded the Prix Billie Holiday from the Académie du Jazz. Since 1995, Elling has collaborated with pianist, composer, and arranger Laurence Hobgood, leading a quartet that regularly tours the world.

another miracle - Sheila Jordan

"'If You Could See Me Now' is another miracle. [Sheila] Jordan adopts a daringly slow tempo and delivers the gorgeous melody and anguished lyrics in a confessional whisper. The rainbowlike substitute harmonies the band plays were devised by pianist Bill Evans. He wrote them out for Jordan on a cocktail napkin at a club."—from Mark Stryker's book "Jazz from Detroit" https://jazzfromdetroit.com/

If you don't know Cleo Laine - you're missing out.

Happy birthday to English jazz and pop singer and an actress, known for her s**t singing and for her vocal range, Dame Cleo Laine, Lady Dankworth, DBE (born October 28, 1927). Though her natural range is that of a contralto, she is able to produce a "G above high C", giving her an overall compass of well over three octaves.

Laine is the only female performer to have received Grammy nominations in the jazz, popular and classical music categories. She is the widow of jazz composer Sir John Dankworth.

One of the 2 (of 3) women are tagged as McPrtland. I don't believe the Black woman to her right is tagged correctly. and there is another women to the left - Mary Lou williams. Only 3 women - well it was in 1956 - and all the cats and kitties didn't show for the Pix. The other female is Maxine Sullivan
Kane, a freelance photographer was on assignment for Esquire magazine, and he took the picture at around 10 a.m. on 12 August 1958 at 17 East 126th Street, between Fifth and Madison Avenue in Harlem. Esquire published the photo in its January 1959 issue.

The astounding moment in which 57 jazz greats helped photographer Art Kane make history outside a brownstone on E. 126th St.

Billy ECKSTINE & His Orchestra " Rhythm In A Riff " !!!

Happy Birthday Mr. Billy Eckstine Singer and bandleader William Clarence Billy Eckstine was born on July 8, 1914 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Eckstine formed his own big band in 1944, in which future jazz innovators like Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, and Dizzy Gillespie would hone their craft.
Eckstine's smooth baritone and distinctive vibrato broke down barriers throughout the 1940s, first as leader of the original bop big-band, then as the first romantic black male in popular music.

An important cultural figure, Eckstine was one of the first black male singers to specialize in romantic ballads rather than simply blues and novelty songs. Enjoy Billy ECKSTINE & His Orchestra " Rhythm In A Riff " http://youtu.be/LRUKHWJyrbs

Yo-Yo Ma speaks the truth

"Connecting art to social justice: 'We have a bigger purpose,' he said. 'It’s never art for art’s sake, because even if I do it for myself in my head, I have an ideal. I’m actually trying to take something — a construct, a concept, a theory — and then I want to make it visible, I want to make it audible, I want to make it tactile. I want to make it felt.'"

Singer Sheila Jordan going strong at 90

"For when Sheila Jordan is at work, no one can predict exactly what will happen, including the singer herself. The siren of a passing ambulance, the ka-ching of a cash register or any other random burst of decibels could become fodder for her next vocal flight, as has happened often in her Green Mill shows." Dear Sheila Jordan keep flying high with Bird

Howard Reich speaks with superb jazz singer Sheila Jordan, who's still touring the world at age 90 and swings into the Green Mill Jazz Club this weekend.
