From the moment there was an “online,” there was s*x online. In fact, virtually every significant development that defines the Internet we know and love (and hate) today—privacy issues, online payments and online banking, dating, social media, streaming technology, mass data collection—came out of the meeting of s*xuality and technology.

A lively, highly visual history, filled with broad themes and backstories, pioneering personalities and eureka-moments, How S*x Changed the Internet and the Internet Changed S*x is a short, serious, and entertaining look at the intertwining convergence of s*x and the Internet. Written by Vice senior writer Samantha Cole, How S*x Changed the Internet ... covers everything from Jennicam (remember her?) to the problem of “deep fakes,” from “A Brief History of Online Dating” to how the government has been trying to reckon with NSFW content, cybers*x to what the promise of VR spaces like the Metaverse hold for the future of human s*xual interactions. P**n is just one part of the story. Rather, this is a story about human nature during the digital gold rush of the last fifty years.

How S*x Changed the Internet ... is on sale Tuesday, 11/15 wherever books are sold! Visit the link below for more information on the book launch event at @PowerhouseArena in Brooklyn, where Samantha will be in conversation with fellow author Liara Roux. bit.ly/3AbK0mw

11/08/2022

Long before the James Webb Telescope rekindled our fascination with astronomy and our place in the cosmos, the Space Shuttle began to capture the world’s attention with its first test launch on April 12, 1981 and continued to do so until its final mission on July 8, 2011.

The Space Shuttle: A Mission-by-Mission Celebration of NASA's Extraordinary Spaceflight Program (bit.ly/SpaceShuttleBook) tells the story of NASA’s 140 space flights through each mission’s most exceptional image, curated by celebrated space photographer Roland Miller. Readers will learn the stories of each of the missions through incredible photos taken by NASA photojournalists, fine art photographers, and the astronauts themselves. Each image is accompanied by text that includes quick facts such as crew members, launch date, and landing date, as well as a short overview of highlights and purpose.

Packaged in a beautiful hardcover slipcase, “any backyard astronomer or space enthusiast would be delighted to have this visual journey on their shelf.” —The Strategist, The Year’s Most Giftable Coffee-Table Books

Panel Explores Surge in Book Bans, Policies Targeting the LGBTQ Community

An online panel this week explored how book bans are targeting and impacting the LGBTQ community—and how concerned communities can push back. Sponsored by ACLU People Power, Hachette Book Group, Lambda Literary, and We Need Diverse Books, the timely discussion was led by the ACLU’s Gillian Branstetter and featured Algonquin Young Readers author and Book Riot writer Kelly Jensen; Stephana Ferrell, co-founder of the Florida Freedom to Read Project, and authors Mark Oshiro and Lev AC Rosen.

With a wave of book bans and educational gag orders surging across the country, an online panel this week explored how the bans are targeting and impacting the LGBTQ community—and how concerned communities can push back.

WIRED’s Picks for the 15 Books You Need to Read This Fall

WIRED recommends How S*x Changed the Internet and the Internet Changed S*x by Samantha Cole (https://samleecole.com) as one of 15 books you need to read this fall.

“From the browser cookie to the dynamic webpage to the shopping cart, MOTHERBOARD staff writer Samantha Cole points out that nearly every fixture of the internet as we know it was built, at least in part, by a demand for s*x. As such, her new book, How S*x Changed the Internet and the Internet Changed S*x is, at its heart, a history of the early internet in all of its weirdness and wonder. … ultimately her history affirms that the virtual and physical worlds are inextricable and rife with possibility if the humans tangled up in them play their cards right.” —Eve Sneider

From meditations on mental health to deep dives into the influence of s*x on the internet, these are the season’s must-reads.

The reigning assumption is that if a woman doesn’t want to be pregnant, then she’ll do whatever it takes to prevent a pregnancy from happening. Women who are s*xually active are expected to use birth control or an IUD and insist that men use a condom.

In 2019, the US contraceptive market size was valued at around $8 billion. Of the dozens of contraceptive products, approximately 90 percent of them are created for women, purchased by women, and used by women.

Even though birth control options for men have a long list of distinct advantages, we’ve put the burden on the person who is fertile for only 24 hours *a month*, instead of the person who is fertile 24 hours *a day*, every day of their life.

Men have two options for birth control: condoms and vasectomies. Both are easier, cheaper, more convenient, and safer than birth control options for women.

Condoms are sold in every grocery store, every pharmacy, every bodega, every gas station, every 7-Eleven. There are condom vending machines at nightclubs and in public bathrooms. They are available to purchase 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They might be the most easily accessible product in the whole country.

A highly effective birth control that is safe, affordable, and easily accessible? That you can stock up on? That only needs to be used for a short time during s*x and has zero side effects? Five stars for condoms!

If women are expected to learn how to use their birth control correctly, the same can be expected of men.
