My take away....Editing is like reverse engineering & sets things up so that in the end, things pay off. Editing narrows down good story combined with truth & forms the solid narrative.
The TV Academy's Writer's Peer Group held an important webinar on shifting the cultural narrative on gun safety. We have more gunsin America than we have people. Portraying gun safety is crucial in the world we are living in.
An interesting evening, "Meet the Decision Makers at Youtube".
What makes something "youtube-y"? Content that is culturally relevant in the community zeitgeist. Content with big ideas & breakthrough moments.
Youtube was built on the backs of "pointing the camera on one's self" so the social media platform with the world's largest video library likes to support the visions of the creator community.
Shooting during the time of Covid. Nice to see SAG/AFTRA protocols enacted during an on-camera shoot I recently cast.
Looking forward to tonight's show! In the times we are living, it will be a fun distraction to see the star's homes and watch a creative telecast. Congratulations to all the nominees.

TV Academy Honors those who impact society through storytelling. It was great to see tributes to "16 SHOTS", "At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal", "Unbelievable", "Queen Sugar", "Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj" & "Watchmen".
Just finished voting in 29 categories! Lots of great content this year and amazing performances. There is such stiff competition in the acting categories. Congratultions to all the nominees! Looking forward to the show 9/20.
"Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in the Interactive Media Industry" covered the perspective of mentorship during the INCLUSION REVOLUTION. It's important to prop up under represented story tellers!

1. Pair testing with changing behavior. 2. Adjust concepts to scaling down time spent on set 3. Day before casting is over. Quarantine time is necessary. 4. "Guest stars" & "Day players" will be tricky 5. Extras will be a pool of people shared between shows 6. This may end up one of the safest industries in the world because of the actors. 7. This requires responsible behavior of all involved.

It's a strange year to celebrate anything but we can be grateful for excellent entertainment during the pandemic.
TV Academy webinar ..."Diversity in Film & TV among the Stunt Community: POC".
A few take aways. 1. Networking & mentorship is very important in this area. 2. ND (Nondescript) stunts allow for more diversity. Getting rid of the old mindset of non diversity and streaming services provide more opportunities. 3. Most directors don't care about ethnicity or gender so when using stunt people there is more opportunity. Stunt coordinators need to look further to makes the numbers equal 4. Why is it ok to put make up on a tanned white person to cover a tan but not to put make up on a light skinned african american to make them look darker to match a talent for a stunt? 5. Train, get footage, it will happen.
"VOICE OVER: ALIVE & WELL". TV Academy panel on animation, commercials, games, elearning, promos, home studios, during Covid. Some take aways. 1. Your recording space matters. The equipment should be ample but surroundings matter more than equipment. A whisper room is ideal. 2. The pandemic is a moment to invest more if you are a VO talent but not the time to enter the VO world. 3. Not training sinks your career. It's all about the acting, not the voice. 4. This made me laugh. Even in the pandemic when actors are home, most are still late to recording from their own home studios. Bob Bergen (Porky Pig) was the moderator and there were great equipment tips & important info for staying current during the pandemic.
Fun zoom reception for the Daytime Emmy award winners. Great to run into my ATAS pal, Ari Tan, who was representing ViacomCBS. I was honored to judge the performer in & casting of an animated series, as well as performer in a daytime program. The best part was meeting Tom Donohue, the director of the highly acclaimed 2012 doc, "CASTING BY." His work encapsulated an important piece of entertainment history. It was truly serendipitous that we met at the party. Congratulations to all of the winners.
TV Academy Production Executive Webinar on shooting during COVID. They likened it to "working out with ankle weights on" to go from creative to execution. The sentiment is "the human spirit is here in a big way so let's deliver for the audience." Union coverage & standards will dictate how to move forward with work. Productions have been working with the Mayo Clinic for guidance. Some producers have resorted to 21 days of quarantine for the entire crew & cast & created a safe environment to shoot. In the end, "there are sausage makers & people who want to eat sausage so we just have to give you sausage." It was inspiring to hear the commitment to finding safe and productive ways to provide entertainment.
FUTURE OF CASTING panel from the TV Academy. My take away for actors is 1. There are no start dates for production as we knew it. 2. The self tape will be even more important. Get some lights & a background. We see your performance but presentation matters. 3. There will be less guest stars, co stars, extras. The less people on set the better. 4. Number of social media followers doesn't matter BUT how you present yourself on line does. You are your brand & there is responsibility that comes with that. Anything inappropriate will deter you from getting a role. 5. What is the "IT FACTOR"? Your AUTHENTICITY...the thing we can't direct someone to do. 6. "Play well with others". It didn't matter before but now it does. In these times, we want to work with good people!

Quarantine Homework. Finished my last 3 categories for the Daytime Emmys. I particularly enjoyed seeing the animated submissions and keeping up with children's television.

Starting May 29, We Are One: A Global Film Festival will present 10 days of programming from Cannes, Berlin, Venice, and beyond.
In theatre there is a tradition- whenever the theatre is empty we are always sure to leave one light on. Typically on a stand in the centre of the stage, this light is known as the ghost light. There are many stories about its origin- but it’s meaning is unmistakable.
It means though the theatre is empty, WE WILL RETURN. So here’s to us. The actors, the technicians, the directors, the carpenters, the designers, the dancers, the teachers, the students, the freelancers, those on tour, those at sea, the electricians, the stitchers, the makers, the stage managers.... THE ARTISTS. Many of us have taken big hits during this virus. Financial and emotional weights have come crashing down as the entire industry is reduced to nothing but a bunch of ghost lights. But those ghost lights are temporary place holders. They are a sign. We might be down now- but our passion, our creativity, our drive is still centre stage. We’ll be unplugging those ghost lights in no time. Until then- here’s a ghost light- to let the world know WE WILL BE BACK
