It’s honestly crazy because the woman next to me was clearly not having it while I was doing tasbeeh… and the wild part is I wasn’t even reading anything out loud. Just quietly remembering God to myself.

We really live in a time where seeing someone practice faith peacefully in public makes some people uncomfortable. Instead of reacting, I just kept doing more dhikr. Sometimes your peace will bother people more than your words ever could.

I know to some people I may seem “too religious,” and to others maybe I’m not religious enough. But I think a lot of us are just trying to navigate life while holding onto our faith the best way we can. We live in a generation where it feels like everything is pulling you away from God, so no, this isn’t me trying to show off. It’s just a reminder that you can still live life, chase your dreams, enjoy beautiful moments, and still stay connected to Allah through it all.

Hi, I’m Zubair.
My story spans a few places — my parents are from Hyderabad, India. I was born in Dubai, raised in Chicago, and five years ago I moved to New York City on my own for the first time.

I’ve been creating content and working in fashion for nearly a decade, but this chapter feels different. I grew up pretty sheltered, and now I’m learning who I am in real time.
