I was asked recently at a conference why I didn't adhere to the old presentation structure. We all remember the “Tell them what you’re going to tell them. Then tell them. Then tell them what you told them.”
It doesn’t work for me. It doesn’t work for my audiences. I like to use the “HEADLINE APPROACH.” I like to give my audience the “SO WHAT” up front in a headline so that they know, right off the bat, why I’m there, what I want, what’s in it for them, and how listening to my presentation will create a win-win for all of us.
It’s as simple as that..

You really need to read this book!
A while back we trained a great group of customer facing employees. When the day started, their arms were crossed. Their eyes glared with the same "Gu-head. Prove something to me" that I'm used to seeing. We started by saying that everything we did that day was for them: for their present job and for whatever jobs they would have in the future. And we asked that they just give us a chance. In about an hour the arms were uncrossed and they were even leaning in. Two hours in, there were questions and discussion. By lunch we were a team.
Today I found out that one of those people took everything she learned that day, got her resume together, went after and landed her dream job. I will keep that thank you note forever.
Will be writing more soon. But just want to say: I wish we had a president on this Independence Day...not a Side Show...not a Reality Star...not a Billionaire, but more, someone we could look up to and appreciate as someone who cared about all of us, not just those who can make him wealthier.
