Editorial: Religious freedom is no excuse for discrimination against gay couples

A Catholic social-services agency urged the Supreme Court this week to rule that the agency can participate in the city of Philadelphia’s foster-care program while refusing to work with same-s*x couples. The court should reject the agency’s appeal and make it clear that religious freedom may not be used as a license to discriminate.

The Supreme Court must not allow a loophole in anti-discrimination laws.

General information

The equality of gay, le***an, bis*xual and transgender people is one of the largest remaining human rights issues of our time. Although there are many challenges ahead to help combat the discrimination of members belonging to the LGBT community, we are well on our way in beginning a new dawn of progress for our future and generations to come. Government officials around the world have, and are continuing to fight in the efforts against prejudice/unjust actions towards members in the Gay Community, along with implementing laws within our society which teach individuals how to treat others with respect and dignity. As it is critical to ingrain a fundamental understanding of tolerance, led by larger institutions around the globe to protect the human rights of all citizens, the greater responsibility rests on the actions of individuals to set examples and lead the movement.

In 1995, I decided to enter To the Hipica Vocational School, this harboring the hope of turning into reality the dream that I had since I was a child: to be a horse Rider. With this, I became that one applicant to whom more requirements were demanded in addition to those that by the nature of that profession are required. Aside of must having the proper height, weight, skills, courage, integrity, I was also required to have Life and Disability Insurance. Documents that I presented at the time because it could not give no opportunity for rejection. Regret for the hypism in the refusal to enter for reasons supposedly full enrollment. So I went to the former horse manager, Ledo. Gonzalo Combas Sancho with whom he shared the above. He graciously referred me with a letter recommending open space, an invitation that was immediately followed. Upon my arrival I was able to clearly identify how uncomfortable it was for a course instructor to have me at her presence. The derogatory comments she used to make about me raised concerns between the inscription partners rapidly began to come back to me. The treatment with the rest of the teaching staff was excellent. I invited my colleagues to ignore these derogatory comments and situation as they contributed to-nothing positive . On June 5, 1995, the referenced person assigned me the ride of "Gaily Go", an animal with serious problems of taming. However, I found myself obliged to work on it "because this person is lonely and usually assigns males The result was an accident that put me on a comatose state. I faced a long, slow, and tedious recovery, after coming out of the coma with hospitalization of two months and 18 days in the Industrial Hospital of the Medical Center. In this Industry there are people who resist and have no capacity. This may be due to their lack of instruction and academic preparation; when dealing with slightly different people. It was then that very serious people in the Industry let me know what my colleagues tried several times to make me understand; that everything responded to a grotesque and hidden homophobia, totally unfounded. On this, my case, it shows little or no tolerance to human differences, right of choice. To those hundreds of silent witnesses out there: My case is not the only one, because with all the risks that this sport has in itself, it has been possible to prove this type of intolerance practice through the Courts. I greatly appreciate my reader friends for allow me to share my feelings and experiences with you. I want to raise awareness of the treatment I received at the Hipica School.
