A good poster has many layers, it goes beyond advertising and makes statements about style, history, fashion, and taste at the time. It is these layers that can turn a poster into a work of art. This book showcases 480 posters by more than 200 artists and designers and tells a comprehensive history of the poster. The book includes #artnouveau #bauhaus #popart , and contemporary posters from preeminent artists such as #AlphonseMucha, #EgonSchiele, #PabloPicasso, and #AndyWarhol and from noted designers ranging from #LucianBernhard and #AMCassandre to #SaulBass, #TadanoriYokoo, and #StefanSagmeister. The book also introduces many other leading poster designers whose names are less well-known. Contemporary advertisements for #CalvinKlein, #UnitedColorsofBenetton, and #Coachella are also explored. By tracing the history of the poster, this book shows social developments throughout the world and illuminates how art styles have changed over time.

“Eichner was a fixture of 1990s nightlife and served as both its official and unofficial photographer in an era before cellphones and selfies. The book takes readers beyond the velvet ropes and into the spaces that witnessed some of the decade's most raucous and sought-after parties.

He recalls that Trump 'loved to get his picture taken' and shares a photo of Joan Rivers being embarrassed of having her picture taken while being hoisted up by two shirtless men on her birthday.

Texts by famous club owner Peter Gatien and New York Times photo editor Gabriel H. Sanchez offer a historic and cultural perspective on an era when New York City was 'more affordable and every night saw artists, bankers, drag queens, musicians, and poets reveling together.”

Thirty years after Yosh*tomo Nara rocketed to fame with his paintings of sinister figures, the artist has developed his practice to reflect his unique, empathic eye. This book presents the full range of Nara’s work. Along with his most recognisable pieces, such as his ubiquitous portraits of wide-eyed figures on monochromatic backgrounds, readers will discover his earliest paintings, sketched on surfaces ranging from envelopes to cardboard made during his time in Germany, as well as an installation that re-creates his drawing studio. His most recent works are also represented, including his large-scale bronze and ceramic figurines and portraits made following the 2011 earthquake that devastated Japan. Comparing and contrasting these pieces through Nara’s distinctive musical lens, the catalogue also features “liner notes” written by the artist about various albums in his personal collection, published in English for the first time.

Hailed as “British dance’s true iconoclast,” Michael Clark is a defining cultural figure in the contemporary dance world. Since emerging in the early 1980s as a prodigy at London’s Royal Ballet School, Clark has remained at the forefront of innovation in dance, working in close collaboration with a broad range of pioneering artists such as Sarah Lucas, Leigh Bowery, Charles Atlas, Elizabeth Peyton and Wolfgang Tillmans.
As a young choreographer, Clark brought together his classical ballet training with London’s club culture, fashion, and punk rock to establish himself as one of the most innovative artists working in modern dance.

Tracing the chronological evolution of his career and featuring contributions by Charles Atlas, @mrkimjones , Sarah Lucas, Susan Stenger, Elizabeth Peyton, and Jarvis Cocker, our forthcoming catalogue with @barbicancentre will be available from all good booksellers from November 10th!

Sure, it may only be Monday but we couldn’t resist sharing a favourite recipe from our new title Behind Bars, which explores the world of notorious fictional gangsters and mobsters with 60 boozy recipes inspired by these legendary lowlifes!

.............................................

The New York Sour

Henry Hill, played by Ray Liotta in GoodFellas, is seen sharing a variety of liquor including Leroux Anisette, Bacardi rum and a lot of Crown Royal Canadian whisky, but with food he obviously drinks a good quality Italian red wine.

The New York Sour is a Whiskey Sour with a red wine float. Probably best to use a good Chianti if you want to win Hill’s favour.

.............................................

INGREDIENTS

Rye, bourbon (or Canadian whisky) - 60ml | 2oz
Lemon juice - 30ml | 1oz
Rich syrup - 15ml | 0.5oz
Float: Red wine - 22ml | 0.75oz

METHOD

Shake the first three ingredients for around 15 seconds. Strain into a Rocks glass over ice. Gently pour the red wine over the back of a barspoon to float on top of the drink.

In her new book, How to Spot an Artist @thejealouscurator uses her characteristic playfulness, lively illustrations, and humor to help kids overcome negativity about their artistic endeavors—and to help them redefine what being an artist means. Every page delivers encouragement to the kid who thinks artists all live in cities, or that art has to look like something familiar, or that painting and drawing are the only way to make art. In a world that drastically undervalues creative freedom, Krysa’s whimsical paintings and collages joyfully proclaim that art is essential and that artists are everywhere. Additionally, a page at the back of the book includes ideas for art projects—because who wants fewer art projects? Nobody!

“I had been thinking about musicians who self-record, and how their music often has this special sound that seems like it can only come from an artist working in their own space,” Tweedy said in a statement. “I’d been self-recording since high school and I love the process so much, but I hadn’t seen many stories about it (even while ‘making-of’ things become more commonplace). So we started running around the country, interviewing and photographing artists who make records at home, on the road, in their bedrooms, in barns.” - @spencertweedy speaks to @rollingstone on his forthcoming title with @lad_design which is published in a few short days on October 20th!

We’re absolutely thrilled to see @themontydon discuss American Gardens with Matt Collins over in @guardian earlier this month 🌱

“You’re confronted with two inescapable influences: first, the vast and dramatically diverse topography and climate of the country; and, second, the comparative newness of western interaction with it. “That’s why America is so fascinating,” Don says. “We Europeans underestimate the extent to which we imbibe our history and accept without question the evolution of our landscape and our gardens. Whereas in America there’s a huge gulf between wilderness and domesticity: it’s still this astonishingly open country with room to explore, physically and creatively.”

“Tillett Wright uses the adversity he has known as his power, channeling his own pain into a rallying cry for those whose voices seldom get heard. With Self Evident Truths, out now through Prestel, he has done it again, shining a light of solidarity on the queer community while also squinting at it, calling into question its very nature.” Big thanks to @interviewmag @nickkharamis and @kingprincess69 for the magical feature on the new work by @iolovesyou

“In the petite, square, hardcover book are a rainbow of Renstrom’s photographs as often comedic sexological metaphors: a cherry on a pedestal addressing virginity, a tiny swirl of poop at a brightly colored doorway addressing anal play, brightly colored clitoris puppets with googly eyes reminding readers to “get cliterate.” It updates and revitalizes the often tired (and white-cis-heterosexual) imagery of sex education texts past with vibrant and funny images, allowing for another way in to the accessibility of sexual information.” 🙌🙌

Beloved photographer Ernst Haas was widely considered an early innovator of colour photography. Here, collected for the first time, are his colour photographs of New York City in the 1950s and 60s.
When Haas moved from Vienna to New York City in 1951, he left behind a war-torn continent and a career producing black-and-white images. For Haas, the new medium of colour photography was the only way to capture a city pulsing with energy and humanity. These images demonstrate Haas’s tremendous virtuosity and confidence with Kodachrome film and the technical challenges of colour printing. Unparalleled in their depth and richness of colour, brimming with lyricism and dramatic tension, these images reveal a photographer at the height of his career.

“iO Tillett Wright's book, Self-Evident Truths: 10,000 Portraits Of Queer America, feels not only cosmic, but necessary. Featuring portraits of queer people from Alabama to Colorado, and including the likes of Megan Rapinoe, Sarah Paulson, and Lena Waithe, this photo project acts as a decade-long yearbook for queer people in this country — providing us with memories of where we've been, what we've accomplished, and the power that lies in our hands”

@michaelkennaphoto is celebrated for his mysterious and exquisite black-and-white natural and industrial landscapes.
He is especially revered for his images of Asia, where he has traveled to some of the world's most beautiful locations. It is no wonder that among Kenna's prolific creations are numerous images of the Buddha from countries such as Cambodia, China, Japan, India, Korea, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Captured in shrines, temples, sanctuaries, private homes, and museums, these images are quiet, uncluttered, and striking in the interplay of dark and light, line and shadow. Also included in the book are a selection of Kenna's Asian landscape photography, an essay about Buddhism, and excerpts from Buddhist scriptures. Fans of Kenna's distinctive evocative style will savor the myriad perspectives of the Buddha's singular form, while anyone inspired by the Buddha's message will be drawn to this photographic journey towards enlightenment. 🙏
