Have you ever had your whole world stop, and you're just standing there thinking, "Now what do I do?"
Beth Karas knows that feeling better than almost anyone I've talked to. She started out as a lawyer back in the 80s. Then in the early 90s, she got "discovered" while working a trial and became the face of Court TV for the next three decades. If you've ever followed a high-profile crime case, chances are Beth was the lead reporter covering it. She genuinely laid the groundwork for what we now call "true crime" as a genre. Today she's a legal analyst across true crime TV, most notably Investigation Discovery.
In this episode, Beth tells a story that left me completely speechless. But the part of this conversation I keep coming back to is what happened after Court TV, when she got let go. That's a moment a lot of us in this industry live through. Me included. We talk about what happens when the job that defined you disappears, and what it actually takes to rebuild who you are on the other side of it.
Beth and I met at a birthday party for a mutual friend, and one conversation about the state of journalism turned into this whole episode. We are both VERY passionate about it, and it shows.
