Sometimes we all have to make a confrontational phone call. To make a complaint, an inquiry, patch up an argument or misunderstanding. And we’re really good at procrastinating and dread picking up that phone. The best way to deal with a confrontational phone call confidently is to write out what you want to say as if you were writing a script. Re-write it until it flows and gets right to the point. Then practice it out loud. Pretend you’re an actor and the words need to sound conversational and off the top of your head. Now place the phone call, take a deep breath and recite it from the page just the way you practiced. Get it over with, the wait is usually worse than the reality.

Do you have trouble remembering names? It’s a common problem and you’ve probably used it as an excuse one or twice, “I’m so sorry but I’m terrible with names.” But there is no sweeter sound to a person than their own name. It makes people feel special, important, and acknowledged. Not remembering their name could make them feel like you just don’t care enough to try. Here’s what you can do. When you are introduced to someone, stop everything you are thinking about and say their name back to them. Use it several times. Try and think about anyone else you know with that name. A friend, a celebrity etc. Write it down if you can. Repeat it over and over to yourself as they are speaking. Repetition helps it take hold in your brain. Start telling yourself, "I’m getting better at remembering names", and you will.

Get yourself some Anonymous Calmfidence®️. Donating money anonymously, giving food, clothing or other necessities to help others, fulfilling wishes big or small (like the Make-A-Wish Foundation), brightening others days in anyway anonymously is an enormous Calmfidence®️ booster. Not expecting anything in return and enjoying the outcome from a distance can give you a wonderful “cat that ate the mouse” feeling of fulfillment and a constant little upturned sneaky smile that you know you’ve done good in the world and it's your own little secret. It builds your inner strength and your outward Calmfidence®️ every time.

A study out of the University of Maryland has shown that eating fermented foods may reduce anxiety. More recently, there’s been extensive research about the brain-gut connection. Some people even refer to the gut as the ‘second brain’. These powerful, fermented foods significantly increase the “good” bacteria we need in our digestive system, reduce inflammation, contain anti-oxidants, and give a boost to our immune system to fight infection. So next time you’re in need of some Calmfidence®️ before a big event, speech, or interview, enjoy some fermented food: Pickles, Sauerkraut, Probiotic Yogurt, Kefir, Kimchi, Kombucha, Tempeh, and Miso.

Want to be perfectly clear when you speak? Put down that milk and cheese! Simply put dairy products equal phlegm. And phlegm does not equal a clear throat. Voice-over artists, singers, and professional speakers won’t touch dairy before a performance or presentation. So if you want your message to come across without having to clear your throat (which could be perceived as a sign that you are nervous), skip the dairy a few hours before!

Just say No! For many people saying no is hard to do. We’re afraid to disappoint, we fear people might think we’re not helpful, can’t handle the task, or that they’ll think less of us. But taking on too many commitments can spread you too thin- you won’t be able to give your best to anything. Having the Calmfidence®️ to say no is a gift you give yourself. Tell people that when you do things you give your all and you don’t want to give them any less so you’ll have to pass. Then offer to help them another time or help them find someone else who can help. If you can’t be the source you can be a resource – both are just as valuable. Know when to say no, it’s a real Calmfidence®️ booster!

Create a “Calmfidence®️ mantra”. All our lives we’re programmed subconsciously by the things people say to us and the negative things we tell ourselves. And repetition really locks things into our brain even when we don’t realize it. Let’s make that work to our advantage. We can program our subconscious with positive words we repeat to ourselves over and over again. Pick 3 words, maybe “strength, persistence, health” or “goodness, light, and love”, integrity, energy, peace” – say this mantra to yourself over and over several times a day or anytime a negative thought comes into your head. You can change up your 3 word mantra anytime depending on your situation or goal. Positive self-programming can work wonders for your Calmfidence®️ and your life.

The Scent of Calmfidence®️. Ah, you’re all showered, nice and fresh and squeaky clean. But think twice before you reach for that favorite cologne or perfume if you’re going on a job interview or first date. Studies show that the human brain doesn’t respond well to artificial fragrances and can actually be repulsed by them. Remember scent is the sense that brings back strong memories. So for that important first meeting with someone new, skip the bottled fragrance and go in smelling like a fresh shower instead.

Give some Complementary Calmfidence®️. People who are confident and comfortable with themselves are always ready with a compliment for others. Everyone likes to be acknowledged – it feels good, can build rapport, and even help find common ground and uncover common interests. Find even just a small thing to give a genuine compliment on. Studies show people who give genuine compliments are perceived as confident, likeable people. A compliment breaks the ice, breaks the silence and tells a lot about the giver!

If your cheeks blush and your heart pounds when you get nervous take a deep breath. Studies show that by taking deep long breaths and exhaling slowly you can slow down your heart rate which in turn will get rid of that blush. This kind of controlled breathing forces your fight or flight reaction to calm down. Once it starts working you’ll be able to focus and think straight. By the way, the more you put yourself into nerve wracking situations the more you will become desensitized and each time you will be less anxious and less nervous.

Take the Rocking Chair Test! If you’re not feeling confident about a decision you have to make picture yourself as a 90-year-old sitting on a front porch rocking in a rocking chair reminiscing about your life. Will you regret your decision, be glad about it, or not even remember it in the grand scheme of things? The rocking chair test can really put things into perspective and help you feel more confident when making decisions and choices in your daily life.

Stand at Attention! Shoulders back chin up! There’s a reason drill sergeants, teachers, and moms have barked these words for countless decades – posture is the first body language indicator of Calmfidence®️. Standing up straight with your head held high is worth 1000 words about how you feel about yourself. Do a posture check in any situation that you want to appear confident in.

Take a Calmfidence®️ Bath! Taking time for self-care can give your Calmfidence®️ a quick boost. Soak in a hot tub with some bubbles, maybe light a few candles, put on some soft music, recharge your batteries. Schedule a date with yourself or you won’t do it. (I raid Bath & Body Works every few months to make sure I’m stocked up on great smelling bath oils and lotions). Once you do just a little pampering you’ll be amazed how reenergized you’ll feel. Making time for you is an investment in your overall Calmfidence®️ level.

Picking or chewing your cuticles due to stress? Dry nail beds from hand sanitizer? Can’t get that manicure you’ve been needing? Lip Balm to the rescue! Yes, lip balm -it smoothes those dry chapped lips why not your nails and hands? Just dab it onto the dry rough areas and rub it in. You can do it on the cuticles, in between your fingers, and on any rough parts on either side of your hands. Works like a charm when there’s no hand cream in sight.

“Eat the Elephant Calmfidence®️.” The first time I heard the term “Eating the Elephant” was from an acting teacher describing the technique used to memorize long scripts and monologues. If you look at something big as a whole it seems as enormous as an elephant. But when you look at it in sections like the elephant’s foot or tail it seems easier to digest. The same goes for solving any problem confidently. Don’t stare the whole problem or elephant in the face, break it down into pieces and deal with one part at a time.

Take a mini vacation to the island of silence. Mini breaks of silence can help increase your Calmfidence®️. We rarely give ourselves time to catch our breath or have calming silence in our lives. All you really need is 2 minutes here and there a few times a day. Try it at the water cooler, parked in your car, in a restroom, a hallway or stairwell. Take a few deep breaths, close your eyes and just be still, be silent. Doing this throughout a hectic day will help you feel more confident in general. You can also do this with mini meditations.

We’re so used to asking and worrying about what can go wrong. An instant Calmfidence®️ booster is to focus on what could go right. When you find yourself thinking negatively, stop drop and roll- flip it! Ask yourself what could go right here? Then visualize it, feel good about it, focus your energy there instead. This might take some practice but keep it up, you’ll be amazed at how much more confident you feel. For more Calmfidence®️ Tips visit us on our website https://patriciastark.com/tips-and-resources/
