On 10th January 2026, officers of the Immigration Intelligence Unit, on routine patrol around the Barra–Jinack sea crossing point, intercepted three (3) young females aged 17, 18, and 19 years respectively.

The suspects were found loitering along the seaside with backpacks and were conveyed to the Immigration Office for screening. Confirmed as natives of Tanjeh and Jabang, they admitted their intention to embark on irregular migration. Further inquiries revealed that the journey was facilitated by a Senegalese national residing in Tanjeh.

The National People’s Party (NPP) has won both the Bantanjang and Kaif Ward by-elections.

In Bantanjang, Abdoulie Badjie (NPP) won with 402 votes, narrowly beating independent candidate Bakary M. Manga, who received 397 votes. Alhagie Njie, also independent, polled 155 votes.

In Kaif, Omar Touray (NPP) defeated Sulayman Sanneh (UDP), with NPP securing 1,127 votes to UDP’s 895, according to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

The Regional Command of the North Bank Region (NBR) has today, Friday, January 9, 2026, received reinforcement from Banjul as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security operations and address irregular migration within the region.

The reinforcement consists of a Joint Security Task Force drawn from the Gambia Police Force, Gambia Immigration Department, State Intelligence Services, Gambia Armed Forces, Gambia Navy, and the Gambia Fire and Rescue Services.
