US–IRAN WAR: HORMUZ REMAINS THE BIGGEST DANGER

The conflict is increasingly threatening the world's energy and shipping system. Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen to only a handful of vessels a day, compared with roughly 125 daily before the war.
Sky News

The biggest weapon may not be a missile. It could be the ability to make shipping companies too afraid or too expensive to operate.

If Hormuz remains severely restricted, the economic consequences could spread far beyond the Middle East.

Could the Strait of Hormuz become the most important battleground of this war?

Rick Steves has spent decades helping Americans discover the world through travel. But recently, one of his most meaningful investments happened much closer to home.

In south Snohomish County, the Lynnwood Hygiene Center had quietly become a vital resource for people experiencing homelessness. The modest building offered something many take for granted: hot showers, warm meals, clean clothing, and access to laundry facilities. On certain days, visitors could also receive care at a small pop-up medical clinic.

Since opening in 2020, the center had provided more than 50,000 showers and supported roughly 700 members of the local community—many of whom often go unseen by the world around them.

Then the organization received troubling news: the property owner needed to sell the land. The Jean Kim Foundation, which had operated the center rent-free for five years, did not have the funds to purchase it. Without a solution, the center would close just before Christmas.

Executive director Sandra Mears began what she called a “Hail Mary effort.” She searched for donors, explored alternative locations, and looked for any possible way to keep the doors open—but the answers kept coming back as no.

While preparing for what might have been a farewell gathering, she received an unexpected email from someone named Rick Steves.

At first, she didn’t recognize the name.

Steves had been browsing a local news blog while visiting Phoenix when he came across a story about the hygiene center’s possible closure. The building was located just two blocks from his church, and he realized he had driven past it many times without knowing what it was—or how many people relied on it.

Within three days, he contacted both Mears and the property owner and made an offer.

On December 15, he purchased the property for $2.25 million.

“I vividly remember what it's like as a kid backpacking around the world to need a shower,” Steves told attendees at a community celebration. “This is a place that gives countless people that are down and out a shower.”

What was meant to be a goodbye gathering quickly turned into a celebration. Local supporters donated another $400,000 to help improve the facility. Not only will the center remain open, but it will also expand with additional showers, more laundry machines, and longer operating hours.

Despite the praise, Steves didn’t want the story to focus on him as a hero. Instead, he encouraged people to think about the broader issue.

“If we don't have $2.25 million for a whole county to give homeless people a shower and a place to get out of the rain,” he said, “what kind of society are we?”

He described the purchase as the best $2.25 million he could imagine spending—but emphasized that services like this shouldn’t rely solely on private generosity to survive.

Acts of giving are not new for Steves. In 2005, he funded the construction of a 24-unit apartment building for homeless mothers and their children, and in 2017 he donated the entire $4 million property.

For the people connected to the Lynnwood Hygiene Center, however, the most meaningful part wasn’t the money—it was what the gesture represented.

“It says, ‘They are valued. People out there care about us,’” Mears said. “That means a lot.”

Sometimes the most meaningful journey isn’t across the world.

Sometimes, it’s simply across the street.

Whether these exact words can be reliably attributed to Vladimir Putin or not, the argument they express is one that deserves serious discussion.

The West responded to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine with sweeping sanctions, diplomatic isolation, military assistance to Ukraine and repeated demands for accountability under international law. Yet when it comes to Gaza, critics argue that some of the same governments have responded very differently despite the enormous civilian death toll and destruction.

That doesn’t make Russia’s invasion acceptable. It doesn’t excuse Putin, and it doesn’t mean the situations in Ukraine and Gaza are identical.

It means the principles we claim to defend should be applied consistently.

If attacks on civilians are unacceptable, they should be unacceptable regardless of who carries them out. If international humanitarian law matters, it should matter whether the accused is an adversary or an ally. And if governments demand accountability from Moscow, people are entitled to ask what standard they apply to Israel.

Otherwise, phrases like “rules-based international order” begin to sound less like universal principles and more like rules that change depending on who is involved.

You can condemn Russia’s actions in Ukraine and demand accountability over Gaza at the same time.

Human rights should never depend on alliances.

“We bow to no one.”

That may be the most powerful line in Jean Chrétien’s message to Canada’s American neighbors.

The former Canadian prime minister’s words are a reminder that kindness should never be confused with weakness. A country can value friendship, cooperation and diplomacy while still being absolutely determined to defend its sovereignty and national interests.

Canada and the United States have one of the closest relationships between any two countries in the world. They share a massive border, deeply connected economies, security partnerships and generations of personal ties. But friendship between nations is supposed to be built on mutual respect, not the expectation that one country will simply fall in line whenever the other applies pressure.

“Never mistake our generosity for weakness. Never mistake our tolerance for lack of determination. And never, never mistake our kindness for softness.”

That message goes far beyond one politician or one dispute.

You can be peaceful without being passive. You can be diplomatic without surrendering your principles. And you can remain a good neighbor while making it perfectly clear that your country makes its own decisions.

Canada doesn’t need to be hostile toward America to stand up for itself.

Sometimes the strongest message is also the simplest:

We can be friends. We can be allies. But we bow to no one.

Whether or not Vladimir Putin actually said these exact words, the issue behind them is worth examining seriously.

When Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine, Western governments imposed extensive sanctions, reduced diplomatic ties, provided major military support to Kyiv, and repeatedly called for international-law accountability.

Gaza, however, has produced a different response from many of those same governments. Critics point to the scale of civilian casualties and destruction and question why the reaction has not been comparable.

None of this justifies Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It does not defend Putin, nor does it suggest that Ukraine and Gaza are the same situation.

The broader question is about consistency.

If harming civilians is wrong, that principle should remain the same no matter which country is responsible. If international humanitarian law is truly universal, it should be applied to allies and opponents alike. And if Moscow is expected to face consequences for its actions, it is reasonable to question what standards are being used when Israel is involved.

Otherwise, the idea of a “rules-based international order” risks appearing less universal and more dependent on political alliances.

It is entirely possible to condemn Russia’s actions in Ukraine while also demanding accountability for what happens in Gaza.

Human rights should be a universal principle—not something determined by political alliances..

THIS IS HUGE: Dublin Erupts in Protest as Trump Arrives in Ireland

Dublin sent a powerful message as thousands of protesters took to the streets ahead of Donald Trump’s arrival in Ireland.

The demonstrations were impossible to miss. Giant inflatable figures, Irish flags, and protest signs filled the streets as crowds gathered to make their opposition known.

This was not a small or isolated protest. Thousands turned out, creating a massive and highly visible demonstration in the heart of Dublin.

For many protesters, the gathering reflected anger over Trump’s presidency, ongoing political controversies, allegations of corruption, the Epstein files, and the scandals that have continued to surround his administration.

Instead of remaining silent, demonstrators chose to make their voices heard.

The message was clear: Trump may arrive as a U.S. president and meet with foreign leaders, but his presence does not mean everyone welcomes him.

In Dublin, the streets became a platform for those who wanted the world to see their opposition.

Flags waved. Giant inflatables towered above the crowd. Protesters held their signs high.

And for thousands gathered in Ireland, the message was simple:

They wanted Trump to know that his critics are not limited to America.
