Today is the last day to apply to our 2019 New to Publishing Information Session and Networking Event!

Need some inspiration as you’re putting some final touches on your essay?
Check out this Q&A with one of our 2018 attendees, Mireya!

Q: What is your current role/what do you do?
A: “I’m an editorial assistant for the Harper Voyager/William Morrow imprints. I assist my managers with anything they need during the editorial process such as transmittals, layouts, contract requests, fact sheets, etc. You really get to see behind the scenes of the editorial process- from acquiring to preparing it for publication- and get to work hands on with your managers, authors, agents, and the manuscript!”

Q: What did you learn from the New to Publishing event?
A: “I learned a boat load of stuff! From what each department does, to how to land an interview. The (New to Publishing) event allowed me to network and really get my foot into the publishing world. In fact, this event was where I learned about HarperCollins’ internship program. I made sure to have multiple copies of my resume ready for the event and prepared questions for the mingling portion of the event: doing this allowed me to build my connections, which helped me when applying to the internship program.”

Q: How should attendees prepare for the event?
A: “I think the best way to prepare is researching, revising your resume, and rereading your essay. You want to come in not only with a ton of questions, but also conversations starters. Maybe the editor of your favorite book will be at the event—point that out and talk to them about it! Everyone in the book-publishing world loves books/reading, but the personalized “why” is what makes everyone different. Overall, be yourself and be curious!”

Applications for our 2019 New to Publishing Information Session and Networking Event are open until 11:59pm TONIGHT (10/31) at www.bit.ly/HarperCollinsNTP

Thinking of applying to our 2019 New to Publishing Information Session and Networking Event?
Check out this Q&A with one of our 2018 attendees, Dorian!

Q: What is your current role/what do you do?
A: “I’m the Administrative Assistant to the Department Heard, Jonathan Burnham. He is president and publisher for Harper General Books.”

Q: What was your favorite part of the New to Publishing event?
A: “My favorite part of the (New to Publishing) event was developing camaraderie with fellow book worms who want to better the publishing industry.”

Q: What is your favorite part about working for HarperCollins?
A: “My favorite part of working at HarperCollins is learning under Mr. Burnham’s tutelage and developing rapport with the editors. I’ve learned so much about building rapport and how to think about books not just from an artistic perspective, but the industry as a business.”

Q: What is your favorite HarperCollins book?
A: “I would say my favorite HC book is a tie between The Word is Murder, The Wife, and The Twelve-Mile Straight.”

Thinking of applying to our 2019 New to Publishing Information Session and Networking Event?
Check out this Q&A with one of our 2018 attendees!

-What is your current role?
“I’m the Rights Assistant in the Children’s Subrights Department. In addition to providing administrative support to the team, I license out artwork from our books to foreign and domestic publishers who are looking to reuse it on their own editions (as well as theatrical adaptations), answer inquiries about film/tv rights to our books, and I’m learning about estate care to eventually take that over.”

-How did you benefit from the NTP event?
“I think one of the biggest challenges I faced in trying to get a job in publishing was the fact that I didn’t live in New York. During the presentation, Carolyn gave advice on how to address that in your cover letter and just being able to attend gave me the chance to make connections that I otherwise would never have been able to make without living here, and when I later applied to HarperCollins, I felt like I could write a more direct cover letter since I had been here and met employees.”

-How should attendees prepare for the event?
“This was my first time at a networking event, so I did lots of research on how to prepare for those and what worked really well for me was to prepare a sort of study guide because I always express myself better after having brainstormed thoughts and things I want to communicate and then having those things in front of me on paper. It was a way to keep myself feeling organized in case my nerves made me forget questions I wanted to ask. I do wish that I would’ve made my goals for the event more concrete because I left feeling afraid that I hadn’t accomplished as much as I wanted to. I also reread a lot of my favorite articles from Publishers Weekly and thoroughly reviewed everything about HarperCollins.”

-What was the last great book you read or is there one that you’re excited for?
“I am so excited about Serpent and Dove by Shelby Mahurin (Fall 2019). Oh my I loved this book! And I just read The Black Witch by Laurie Forest and the recently released sequel, The Iron Flower, from Harlequin Teen and fell in love! But my favorite HC book is probably The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley.”

There are only 7 days left to submit your essay for the New to Publishing Information Session and Networking Event, so we’ve put together 7 FAQs to help with your application!

1. When writing your essay, make it personal to you and really showcase your passion for books and publishing.

2. If you applied last year, we are more than happy to consider your new or updated essay!

3. The review process is anonymous. Please do not include your name on your essay, this will take it out of consideration.

4. Before uploading, proof-read everything! Spell-check will not catch the misuse of to, too, two, tow, toe, among other words, so go back in once you’re done and make sure that you’re getting your point across as clearly as possible :)

5. Be sure that you are uploading your essay where the application prompts you for a resume. If you have previously uploaded a resume, you can go into your candidate profile and under “Resume” click on “Replace” to upload your essay.

6. Double check that your submission is complete! You can check this by going to your dashboard and next to “New to Publishing Information Session and Networking Event “ it should read “Received Submission”.

7. And finally – Yes, even if you’ve already applied you can edit or update your submission. Every applicant has until 11:59pm on October 31, 2018 to make any changes to their application.

Have any questions that we didn’t address? You can always contact us on Facebook.com/HarperCareers and Twitter.com/HarperCareers :)

Thinking of applying to our 2019 New to Publishing Information Session and Networking Event?
Check out this Q&A with one of our 2018 attendees!

How did you benefit from the HarperCollins New to Publishing Event?
“Through the NTP event, I met the editor who would later hire me as her intern. In turn, that internship is how I got my foot in the door for my current role.”

What was your favorite part of the 2018 event?
“The informational interview was the best part of NTP for me, since I was able to have an in-depth, one-on-one conversation with an influential person who publishes the books I'm most interested in.”

How should attendees prepare for the event?
“Be up to date on HC books! You don't have to go and read our entire canon, but being able to speak to the major titles we have recently published or will soon publish is key.
What you do after the event, too, is also important. Reach out to the people you had conversations with, remind them who you are, thank them for their time. HC employees will talk with a lot of people at NTP, so make sure you stand out! “

Since reading is key to any position in publishing, what is the last great book you’ve read?
“The Flicker of Old Dreams by Susan Henderson completely blew me away.”
