Resharing one of our favorite posts from 2018:)

We have put together some information to make sure that you feel confident submitting your applications! If you have any questions that aren’t covered please feel free to send us a message. If you have any tips that you want to share, leave a comment below 😀

1. Who should you address your cover letter to?
- During the recruitment process multiple people will be reading your cover letter so it’s best to just keep it simple.
Ex. “Dear Hiring Manager” or “Dear Recruiting Team”

2. Should you submit a separate cover letter for each position that you apply to?
- Yes! Separate cover letters are great because you’re able to get really specific about why that position would be a great fit for you. You can submit up to five different cover letters at a time by simply uploading them to your profile and naming them after the positions.
Ex. Smith_ManagingEditorialInternship.pdf

3. Is there a specific formatting required for cover letters?
- No. Many candidates will use standard formatting (Times New Roman, 12 point font, single spaced, one page), but you can do what feels right for you.

4. Is it HarperCollins or Harper Collins?
- HarperCollins, but don’t worry if you’ve written it the other way before. However, please be sure to double check your letters for any other spelling and grammar mistakes before uploading. We are looking for candidates who are detail-oriented and your cover letter is a great way to show off that skill!

Bonus: There are no deadlines for any applications :)

We are now accepting applications for the third annual New to Publishing Information Session and Networking Event. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit the headquarters of HarperCollins in NYC, network with current employees (including hires from our previous New to Publishing events!), and get tips on resumes, cover letters, and the interview process.

In addition we are excited to announce we will also host a virtual New to Publishing Event! This will give those who are unable to make it to the New York office a chance to learn about the industry, get tips, and do an informational phone interview with a HarperCollins employee.

The New to Publishing events are perfect for anyone without industry experience that is interested in an entry-level role in book publishing. This is a great opportunity for those looking to change fields or to gain exposure!

Hello, I am about to graduate from my university with a B.A. in English Literature with an Emphasis in Creative Writing. I'm interested in the internships you have to offer, but as someone from Missouri I was wondering if the company helps with lodging during the length of the internship? I know it's a stretch to ask, but I'm trying to look at all my options. Thank you.
Hi, is HarperCollins still accepting applications for its 2020 summer editorial internship at its offices in New York City? If so, when is the deadline for applicants? Thank you in advance.
I am in the process of starting my B.A. in English. What schools are the best to look at? I want to work at a publishing house so I thought I guess I should ask one. :)
Are there any tips you'd recommend to customizing a cover letter for specific positions?
MEN’S INSECURITY By Hugo Hanriot Sr. Ken, the son of blue-collar parents, in his early 30s had amassed a fortune. He had done it defying the prediction of his high school teachers who saw him as loser, too dumb to even finish high school. The teachers had pressured the school counselor to get him transferred to a trade school. The counselor, before deciding on the transfer, sent him for a psychiatric evaluation. The psychiatrist who evaluated him wrote on his report: “Ken failed the tests for mental assessments. He is not high school or college material.” Not obvious to his teachers, school counselor or the psychiatrist, was recognizing Ken’s major problem wasn’t his lack of ability to learn – it was what reaching puberty age, charged with testosterone and wet dreams, some youths dwell on sexual images, rather than school lessons. Ken was an average looking teenager with a shy, pleasant disposition who felt embarrassed when his voice started cracking. At that time he got attracted to programs on the internet, TV, movies and magazines with sexual contains. It was then when afraid that his mother would discover the damp spots in his pajamas; he would wake earlier to wash them. Adding confusion to his puberty, he heard schoolmates often bragging about their sexual activities. Why not me he questioned himself. Am I unattractive to girls? During the first months of Ken in trade school, he was placed in different shops to find which one would fit him best. It soon became clear he possessed the uncanny abilities to work with wood. The carpentry instructor besides highly grading his manual skills noticed his creative ability to design and build furniture. Encouraged by his shop instructor’s evaluation of him, he started losing his insecurities. He even got the courage to start dating Marlene, a cosmetology student. It also helped to improve his demeanor the money he was making at his part time job as a carpenter, which allowed him to take Marlene to dinner. After graduating from carpentry school, his instructor recommended Ken to a firm specializing in remodeling apartments in Manhattan. “We buy apartments falling apart at low prices and transform them into luxury ones,” Julia, the middle-aged secretary explained to Ken. “It had made the owner of this company a very wealthy man.” “I have never met him,” Ken admitted. “I thought you were the owner.” “He likes to travel. He leaves me alone knowing I can run his business even better than him.” “I wish I could one day become my own boss,” Ken admitted. “You have all the skills it takes. You remind me of my son when he was trying to establish his own business. I helped him and he became very successful. Unfortunately, his wife and I don’t get along. If you want, I’ll teach you the business part of this enterprise.” “I appreciate it, but I would never be able to save enough to buy beat up apartments.” “You’re making good money here. By now you should have a good credit score with the bank. If you want to enter into a partnership with me, I’ll teach you how to negotiate bank loans. With your credit, my savings, plus the loans I can get from the bank, we’ll have enough to buy our first beat up apartment.” Julia and Ken’s partnership solidified their friendship. She had told him she was a widower that had raised her son alone – now Ken’s age. She had confided to Ken also how the owner of the remodeling company had first tried to seduce her. “I strongly declined his advances and threatened to quit my job if he kept insisting,” Julia laughed. “He cooled off scared of losing my knowledge of the business.” “Where is he now?” “He is a pervert. I heard him talking on the phone with his doctor about his erectile dysfunction. He travels often to Thailand on sex tours loaded with Viagra bottles. I know because I pay all the bills for his trips with company funds.” Ken stayed late that day finishing the apartment he was remodeling with three helpers. Julia, as usual, showed up to inspect the work and pay them their salaries. “Ken, I have good news, I just used the capital we gathered together as a deposit to buy a beat up apartment in a great location,” she confided to him after the three helpers left. “I also wrote a letter of my resignation to our boss and brought yours to sign. It will cut short our boss’ sex tour, but we may be saving the life of a poor Thai woman who the pimps rent as sexual toys to perverted tourists.” That evening Ken returned to his parent’s home shaken by the business he had started with Julia. She was a beacon of strength and optimism, but if the business didn’t work, he would be facing a large debt to the bank. “If we don’t take risks, we’ll never succeed with our business,” she tried to calm him down before departing home. That evening having dinner with his parents distracted Ken from his business worries. When he retired to his bedroom after dinner, the memory of Marlene jumped into his thoughts. Their short and passionate romance had been his only experience with a woman. They had even talked about marriage after graduating from trade school. What had happened with her life? He hadn’t heard or seen her in four years. I will always remember her, she will have forever a place in my heart, he realized. Next day, Ken and Julia met at the beat up apartment they had bought. “Ken, the faster we remodel and sell this apartment, the sooner we’ll capitalize our funds. Give me a list of the materials I need to order.” The three helpers who previously worked with Ken decided to join the new company. Julia after ordering the material came back bringing lunch for everyone. Ken and Julia sat in the kitchen of the apartment to have lunch, the three helpers decided to stay in the living room. “You still look worried,” Julia looked at Ken laughing. “You have to trust my business instincts.” “It’s not about our business. Last night I remembered my first girlfriend. The last time I saw her was four years ago. We were planning to get married.” “Why didn’t you?” “I found out I have erectile dysfunction. We tried several times to be intimate but I couldn’t get an erection – maybe one time I was successful. She was sweet and understanding and tried to encourage me to keep trying, which I did, but it didn’t work out. I thought it would be unfair for her to marry me.” That evening, coming back from work, Ken went straight to the beauty parlor where Marlene used to work. He saw her through the store window holding the hands of a young child, ready to close the store. He instantly walked in and embraced her. When she recovered from the surprise, she told the child, “This is your father, kiss him.” Marlene accepted Ken’s marriage proposal only if he agree to run a paternity test in their son. She wanted to convince him his impotence was produced by fear rather than erectile dysfunctions. Magazines interested in my short stories contact me here or on Facebook
