There was a time when a parent’s word was the final word.
It didn’t require a family meeting.
It didn’t come with a gentle, drawn-out explanation.
It certainly wasn’t up for negotiation.
When you heard the word “no” from a mother standing in a kitchen, you understood the conversation was over. You might have muttered under your breath all the way down the hall to your room, but you knew better than to turn around and argue back.
Today, it seems like society is terrified of letting anyone feel disappointed. Back then, disappointment was just a normal part of growing up.
Mothers and fathers weren't trying to be your best friend. They were too busy trying to raise a functional adult. They understood a harsh reality that seems to have been largely forgotten: if they shielded you from every minor letdown under their roof, the real world was going to tear you apart the second you left the driveway.
They gave us strict boundaries so we wouldn’t fall off the edge.
They gave us unbreakable rules so we understood respect.
They gave us a firm “no” so we could learn how to survive hearing it from a boss, a bank, or life itself.
It didn’t always feel like love in the moment. But looking back, that kind of unshakeable firmness was the greatest armor they could have ever given us.
