Most roads have a simple relationship with rain - water gets into damaged pavement, the damage grows, and potholes appear. Israel Antonio Briseño Carmona decided to turn that problem around.
While studying Civil Engineering at the Autonomous University of Coahuila, Briseño developed PAFLEC, Pavimento Flexible Capaz de Regenerarse, a pavement material incorporating recycled tire rubber and additives. When exposed to water, the material undergoes a chemical reaction intended to help regenerate cracks and damaged areas.
The project won the 2019 James Dyson Award Mexico. It has also moved beyond the classroom: reporting from Mexico says PAFLEC has been used on roads in Camargo, Chihuahua, and Torreón, Coahuila etc so far.
