Primary elections in California are non-partisan. That means candidates from all parties as well as independent candidates all run against each other in the primary. The top 2 candidates in vote count advance to the general election. Shahid Buttar came second to Nancy Pelosi in the primary for the 12th Congressional District, which represents about 80% of the city of San Francisco. Nancy Pelosi held that seat since 1987. Shahid is the first Democrat to become a finalist against Pelosi since 1987. Why is he running? How did he beat all other candidates, including Republicans? What is the smear campaign against him?
