The Bridge Magazine at Hunter College Connecting Hunter College to culture and the arts

The Bridge magazine is a Hunter College online publication devoted to exploring the rich diversity of cultures and arts on campus — as well as in New York City. Founded by students enrolled in the Fall 2010 Magazine Writing class in the Film & Media Department, The Bridge offers cultural features focusing on the passions, virtuosities, and lifestyles of Hunter students. It also provides opinion and commentary on the New York cultural scene with discussions of fashion, music, TV and film, as well as other arts important to Hunter students. Our team of editors, critics, fashionistas, bloggers, and authors are what make this magazine inimitable.

The Bridge – Let’s Talk About Society’s Role In Interracial Relationships

In this thoughtful, courageous feature, Jasmine Burgos tackles the still-thorny topic of interracial relationships.

I never considered the race of my former partner during our earliest moments together. I just saw who I was beginning to love, which was probably why I was taken by such surprise when I experienced a racist remark or two from his family. His family, one of Irish and Italian descent, was seemingly a....

The Bridge – ‘Open Casket’ Opens Old Wounds

In this piece for The Bridge, Nneka Alaka articulates precisely what was so problematic about Dana Schutz's controversial painting of Emmet Till, 'Open Casket.'

When I was first unfortunate enough to encounter Open Casket, I was not quite sure what I was looking at. Then, after finding out it was an image of a disfigured Emmett Till lying in his casket, I was still not sure what to make of it. Dana Schutz, the American artist and creator of Open Casket depi...

“Merry Christmas” was the very first text message ever sent, on December 3rd, 1992, by British engineer Neil Papworth to his pal Richard Jarvis. His greeting never received a response. To be fair, Jarvis didn’t have a cell phone to text back with, but in today’s world, there’s a lot one co...

Sometimes words don’t sit quite right in your mouth. Cacophony. Guffaw. Clunky. That’s fine—it’s easy enough to avoid using them in writing or conversation. They don’t regularly come up in your day to day life. People don’t say, “There was a cacophony of sound coming from the train sta...
