Stalling Farmers March to Delhi at Haryana Border is An Undemocratic Act: Kendri Singh Sabha

Chandigarh, 25 November (2020) Sealing the Haryana borders to stall the Punjab farmers marching to Delhi demanding the scrapping the Centre’s farm laws is an authoritarian step aimed at provoking the democratic protestors to lose their cool thereby providing an opportunity for unleashing the state violence.

Sikh intellectuals associated with the Kendri Sri Guru Singh Sabha said the BJP led Haryana government had even arrested the state's those farmer leaders who are opposing the Centre’s farm laws and proposed to join the Punjab farmers’ march to Delhi.

Stopping the agitating Punjab farmers at all entry points to Haryana is the repeat and reminiscent of the 1980s days when then agitating Akalis on the way to Delhi were obstructed, harassed, and bullied by the Haryana authorities to please then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Those undemocratic acts of the then ruling Haryana politicians subverted democratic protests of the Akalis for preparing a ground for inflicting State repression on Sikhs. Consequently, Sikhs got alienated from the country's mainstream which became the cause of tragic events of June and November 1984. All that gave birth to ultra-nationalist Hindutva, now out to establish ‘Hindu Rashtra’.

Developments of over the last 50 odd years since its creation of Haryana have testified that the province have been carrying the biddings of or acting on the behalf of the New Delhi masters unmindful of the long-term implications for its people. Haryana politicians rarely acted as rulers of an independent province. Practically Haryana has been behaving as a territorial expansion and extension of the New Delhi ruling elite into pre-1966 undivided Punjab.

Against the above-mentioned background, we appeal to the Haryana political class not to get succumbed to political expediency of the day and pick up a leaf from the horrible past experience and allow the farmers to reach Delhi territory. Haryana politicians should keep in mind that their farmers and that of Punjab share the same problems and they have same demand of retaining Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat, rice and other crops.

At the same time, we appeal to the regional and opposition parties of the country to support the farmers’ march and press the Modi government against adopting the dictatorial attitude vis-à-vis farm acts.

A sharp outrage has erupted among the Sikhs and non-Sikh Punjabis residing in J&K after the exclusion of Punjabi language from the “J&K Official Languages Bill”. Notably, the BJP led Indian government is restructuring the constitutional setup of J&K after making it a Union Territory against the wish of the state’s native people.

On September 2, the Indian government has approved a draft legislation to make Urdu, Kashmiri, Dogri, Hindi, and English official languages of J&K. The Indian government is likely to present this bill in the parliament during the upcoming monsoon session beginning on September 14.

Terming the move as a discriminatory one, Sikhs residing in J&K have come out on roads to stage protest against the Indian government for neglecting Punjabi.

Today, a group of Sikhs headed by J&K Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s chairman TS Wazir staged a protest in Jammu while demanding the inclusion of Punjabi language in the “J&K Official Languages Bill”.

Interacting with media on this occasion, TS Wazir said that the Punjab language was a compulsory language like Urdu in J&K till 1981 but with time it witnessed sidelining by the consecutive J&K governments. “Now, the Punjabi language is being totally neglected which is a direct attack on the identity of the Sikh community in J&K,” he added.

The protestors comprised representatives from various Sikh organizations, including Punjabi Lekhak Sabha, Shiromani Akali Dal, Sikh Welfare Front, Sikh Intellectual Circle J&K, International Sikh Federation, Sikh Students Federation, and Sikh Naujwan Sabha

Twitter confirmed on Thursday that an account of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's personal website was hacked with a series of tweets asking its followers to donate to a relief fund through cryptocurrency.

The incident comes after several Twitter accounts of prominent personalities were hacked in July.

Twitter said it was aware of the activity with Modi's website account and has taken steps to secure it.

"We are actively investigating the situation. At this time, we are not aware of additional accounts being impacted," a Twitter spokeswoman said in an emailed statement.

Modi's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the tweets posted on the account @narendramodi_in.

The account, with over 2.5 million followers, is the official Twitter handle for Modi's personal website (https://www.narendramodi.in/) and the Narendra Modi mobile application.

Modi's personal Twitter account, which was unaffected by this incident, has over 61 million followers.

The tweets, which have since been taken down, asked the followers to donate to the PM National Relief Fund through cryptocurrency.

Hackers had in July accessed Twitter's internal systems to hijack some of the platform's top voices including US presidential candidate Joe Biden, former U.S. President Barack Obama and billionaire Elon Musk, and used them to solicit digital currency. - Reuters
