Flashback Friday: MediaPlace Teams Up with Starter for "The Ri...
Take it back to January 1998 --- Starter was the first name in licensed athletic jackets, jerseys and hats. Every hip hop and rap artist was seen in their music videos and on the red carpet sporting their favorite teams. The fuse of the two lifestyles was everywhere!
MediaPlace was tasked by Starter and their ad agency The Silverman Group as well as Urban Marketing Experts Steve Rifkin Company (SRC) to bring to life the concept “The Right Hat” --- a great campaign focused on Hip Hop DJ/Producer FUNKFLEX from HOT 97 in NYC as he teaches kids the right way to wear their Starter hats. The campaign was directed by a great friend to MediaPlace, Scott Kalvert. This is a great campaign that ran during the 97-98 NBA playoffs and Finals (Chicago Bulls over Utah Jazz 4 games to 2) on NBC Primetime Television. Michael Jordan was, of course, the MVP! We produced a lot of great material for this campaign which we are going to feature here over the next couple of weeks. We hope you enjoy it.
Wu-Tang Forever - MediaPlace TV Campaign
Back it up to 1997……… MediaPlace Executive Producer Scott Kushner was challenged by Loud Records to develop a cutting edge television campaign for Wu-Tang Clan's adventurous release WU-TANG FOREVER.
The supergroup's reunion on WU-TANG FOREVER was an earth-shattering event, comparable only to the motherships that took over the planet in the classic sci-fi film INDEPENDENCE DAY. This film inspired the TV commercial concept for WU-TANG FOREVER - a global takeover by a giant symbol recognized worldwide - the WU-TANG logo. The GRAMMY-nominated double album debuted at #1 on Billboard and sold over 600,000 units in its first week, eventually selling over 4 million copies!
"This was a great project to be involved with from both a creative and strategic brand development level," according to Scott. “We worked together with Loud Records VP of Marketing Brett Wright and Creative Director Ola Kudu who challenged us to bring this to life on televisions across the country in harmony with the album's release."
