We were happy to help preserve Evan's precious family photographs after Sandy.

“Discovering all of my family's photos from 3 generations scattered in my basement after the storm was devastating. We had taken the photos for granted and did not realize how
vulnerable these priceless heirlooms were. We realized the importance of protecting this for ourselves and our children and decided to have GoPreserve scan the photos
to preserve them digitally.”

"Although there are so many possessions lost as a result of Hurricaine Sandy I believe the possessions that tell your personal story are the photos. When GoPreserve saved my photos they saved my personal history and it's our history that helps to fortify us as we tackle our present and our future obstacles."

This was from Roberta, she lives in the Rockaways in NY. We are so happy to help preserve what we can! Please email us at [email protected] if you have any questions about your damaged photographs after Sandy. We are here to help you preserve!

Restorers Aims to Save Photos Damaged by Sandy

Our first event yesterday with CARE for Sandy at the Rockaways was a wonderful experience. We had a chance to connect with families and hear their stories, not only about Sandy but about their memories, their parents, their grandparents...

A special thank you to the volunteers, my new friend Lee Lee founder of CARE, and Heather for all of her help yesterday and the past few days. She drove 3 hours to get to the Rockaways from PA!

We will certainly be setting up more of these Scanning events with CARE for Sandy, stay tuned for some photos that have been retouched by their team!

SCANNING EVENT TIPS PART #1 ||| PHOTO PREPARATION

1) Each individual or immediate family will be granted up to 100 FREE scans.

2) Make sure your photos are fully dry. We cannot scan moist photos.

...
3) Remove as much debris as possible from your photos. Doing so may literally save hours of Photoshop time, and will keep our scanners clean for other photos.

---SAND: use a light finger touch to carefully brush away. Be extra gentle around faces

---DIRT: Buy an inexpensive ($3.50) pack of children's paintbrushes by a brand such as Crayola (sold at most drugstores) to gently remove visibly loose material.

---ASH: Use a paintbrush to loosen. If raised flecks appear to be free enough, use a gentle fingernail to flick them off.

---MOLD: Leave it alone. It is likely deeply embedded, and may already have eaten into the emulsion.

---OVERALL: Buy an $8 air compressor/gas duster (used to clean computer keyboards). Attach the straw it comes with. Test the pressure on a piece of paper to expel excess captured moisture. Apply the compressor/straw a few inches from the photo to remove any extraneous fibers or surface flaws.

4) When in doubt, leave imperfections be. Do not scrub or use force. Gentle, gentle, gentle...

CARE for Sandy

Please do not be fooled by this internet myth!

INTERNET-CIRCULATING MYTH BUSTER from an experienced NYC-based archival specialist who will soon furnishing professional salvaging pointers for a CARE for Sandy blog posting:

Do NOT place your photos in the freezer. We repeat. Do NOT place your photos in the freezer. Freezer temperatures can destroy the emulsion. DO place your photos in the fridge. Placing your photos in the fridge will stop mold from growing/spreading, until you have the time to attempt to clean your images, but doing so won't compromise your photographs' fragile emulsion.

Once again. Repeat after CARE for Sandy...

"I will NOT place my photographs in my freezer. I WILL place them in my fridge if I do not have time to attempt to clean them right away."
