Harold Evans Dies at 92; Crusading Newspaperman With a Second Act

We at the Columbia Publishing Course were saddened to learn of the death of Sir Harold Evans. Sir Harold spoke at the course on numerous occasions, sharing his decades-long experience in newspaper, magazine, and book publishing to the delight of the class. His obituary in the New York Times perfectly encapsulated our experience:

"Mr. Evans conveyed a world-weary charm, talking in cultured tones of books and newspaper adventures. Wiry at 5-foot-7, he could appear slightly rumpled from all the travel. Under flyaway hair, his expression was typically thoughtful, a face out of Fellini: gaunt, intense, lined with a lifetime of editorial decisions."

Sir Harold's wife, author Tina Brown, the acclaimed former editor in chief and publisher of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, has also lectured at the course, as has his daughter, CPC 2014 alumna, Izzy Evans, an associate producer at Jigsaw Productions.

We join his family in mourning the loss of this publishing titan–the world was a better place with Sir Harold in it.

In Britain, he helped redefine high-quality newspapers and challenged legal restrictions on the press. In America, he brought new scope and glitz to book publishing as the head of Random House.

Sustainable Fashion Is More Than Just Sack Dresses

Looking for something to read this weekend? Try the just-published HOW TO BREAK UP WITH FAST FASHION by Lauren Bravo. Our #CPC UK students got to read it in advance to prepare for a publicity lecture from PR expert Jessica Farrugia Sharples. We all loved it! Important, engaging, and highly relatable–all markers of a great book. Preview in the link below!

While for a long time the porridgey smock dress reigned supreme, the last few years have brought with it a boom in genuinely stylish, inventive labels doing their bit to bridge the gap between fast fashion’s sugar rush and ethical fashion’s slow-release energy.

An Instant Classic About Learning Ancient Greek

As usual, The New Yorker Comma Queen Mary Norris has us hankering to learn Greek. Read her review of "The Ingenious Language: Nine Epic Reasons to Love Greek," published by our beloved Europa Editions, to see why learning this language is now our New Year's resolution. #greektome #cpcspeaker

With “La Lingua Geniale,” Andrea Marcolongo did something I had very much wanted to do: she wrote about classical Greek while young and freshly enamored of the beauty, economy, and subtlety of the language.

The New York Times Book Review has officially revealed its top 10 books of 2019! If you can't find us during Thanksgiving prep, it's probably because we're curled up near the fire reading one of these. Perhaps it's monumentally unhelpful, but we'll risk it for being well-read.

Publishing takes us all over the place—and since I graduated CPC in 2011 I've had the honor of learning about all the ways storytelling can impact our lives. That's why I'm so excited to share a new offering Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health—a 5-day immersion called #NarrativeHealing. Through mindful movement, daily writing workshops, meditation, and group discussion on spirituality, neuroscience, literature, and more, we unlock the power of sharing our voices in real time. It's a perfect opportunity for caregivers and anyone working with trauma, for themselves or others. Check it out today! https://kripalu.org/presenters-programs/narrative-healing-unlock-power-storytelling?fbclid=IwAR0I1iXuqWJAuLdJymiaFnvt-4-TTLkC69gUJxLEc6CH_PX1Z4oe99ybxuM
If anyone is a fan of Hank Green, or looking to do some publishing-related networking, swing by this free event! There'll be drinks, snacks, and a discussion between Hank Green and Kristen Sieh.
