La Plaza @ ALJA Digital Village | Africa in the Americas: Letieres Leite & Orkestra Rumpilezz with Arturo O’Farrill & Steven Bernstein | Live in Philadelphia
Commemorating the Brazilian debut of this concert video, on the digital platform of the Teatro Castro Alves in Salvador, Bahia, tonight offers a special encore presentation of the full concert originally presented and recorded five years ago, on July 31, 2015 in Philadelphia. The powerful, musical magic of the Afro-Brazilian big band, Orkestra Rumpilezz, led by the remarkable, saxophonist, composer, conductor and educator, Letieres Leite landed in Philadelphia at the beginning of their debut U.S. tour. This Brazilian big band, by way of the state of Bahia and the city of Salvador, joined by Afro Latin Jazz Alliance Artistic Director Arturo O’Farrill and trumpeter and musical adventurer, Steven Bernstein shared an unforgettable evening. This memorable performance also marked the beginning of a musical collaboration between Arturo and Letieres that continues until today. Bringing to the stage a finely-tuned, yet explosive fusion of percussion and horns, Orkestra Rumpilezz combines ancestral Afro-Brazilian drumming with modern harmony offering its own brand of distinctive musical innovation. Characterized by a rhythmic sensibility influenced by jazz and improvisation, the group’s compositions and arrangements are inspired by the musical forms of Bahia with influences from around the world. They are based on the sounds and rhythmic patterns of the “Universo Percussivo Baiano” (Bahia Percussion Universe), rooted in the sacred ceremonies of Afro-Brazilian religion of Candomblé, the large carnaval “Bloco Afros” such as Ilê Aiyê and Olodum, and the sambas of the Bahian recôncavo region, heart of Brazil’s African cultural heritage. The name of the band itself is a kind of blueprint of its musical purpose: Rum, rumpi, and le (the three drums, or “atabaques” used in Candomblé ceremonies) and the “ZZ,” representing jazz. Presented in a 20 piece Big Band format led by composer and arranger Letieres Leite on flute and saxophone, Rumpilezz’s musical structure includes four percuss
