Afro Latin Jazz Alliance

Afro Latin Jazz Alliance ALJA is dedicated to preserving the music and heritage of big band Latin Jazz through performance and education. The non-profit Afro Latin Jazz Alliance (ALJA) was established by Arturo O'Farrill in 2007 to promote Afro Latin Jazz through a comprehensive array of performances, educational programs, recordings and international cultural diplomacy initiatives.
(8)

ALJA serves as the institutional home of the GRAMMY winning Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra established in 2002, and self produces the Orchestra's annual performance season at Symphony Space (2007 - 2014), and maintains a weekly engagement for the Orchestra at the famed jazz club Birdland. Arturo O'Farrill's debut album with the Orchestra, Una Noche Inolvidable, earned a GRAMMY® Award nomination in 2006 and the Orchestra's second album, Song for Chico, (ZOHO) earned a GRAMMY® Award for "Best Latin Jazz Album" in 2009. In February 2011, Mr. O'Farrill and the ALJO released their third GRAMMY® nominated album, 40 Acres and a B***o (ZOHO). In 2011, O'Farrill released his first solo album, The Noguchi Sessions, (ZOHO). On May 6, 2014, O'Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra released their latest album, The Offense of the Drum, on Motéma Music, which is nominated for a GRAMMY® for "Best Latin Jazz Album." Chico O'Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra's Final Night at Birdland (ZOHO) won the 2014 Latin GRAMMY® Award for "Best Instrumental Album". The Alliance also maintains a world-class collection of Latin Jazz musical scores and recordings. ALJA's education initiatives include the Afro Latin Jazz Academy of Music in-school residency program serving public schools citywide with instrumental and ensemble instruction, and the pre-professional youth orchestra, the Fat Afro Latin Jazz Cats, which prepares the next generation of musicians. The Afro Latin Jazz Alliance is a partner project of the Fund for the City of New York and maintains an administrative office at the Harlem School of the Arts -- The Herb Alpert Center where O'Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra are currently artists-in-residence.

Originally presented on September 30 of this year, tonight’s program is presented in partnership with the groundbreaking New Mexico based festival, ¡Globalquerque! Cross Cultural Crossover is the virtual version of this year's festival, featuring four past festival acts – Rahim AlHaj (Iraq), Nation Beat (Brazil/USA), Vivalda Ndula (Angola) and Nohe & Sus Santos (Honduras/New Mexico) collaborating on one another’s songs, deconstructing them and re-presenting them through a cross-cultural lense. This distinctive group of musicians has a strong ALJA connection, as ALJO lead trombonist Mariel Bildsten plays with Nation Beat and Rahim AlHaj is one of the featured guest artists on the Fandango at the Wall project. In between musical segments, two past festival MCs, journalists Catalina Maria Johnson (Beat Latino/NPR) and Mel Minter (Musically Speaking/ABQ The Magazine), will engage in conversation with the artists on the process, collaborations, etc.

Virtual Birdland Jazz Club presents
Guest Artist Antonio Sánchez

Arturo O'Farrill & the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra

Sunday, April 25 - 8:30 pm ET

#ALJADigitalVillage

Born in Mexico City, six time Grammy Award winner Antonio Sanchez began playing the drums at age five and performed professionally in his early teens. He pursued a degree in classical piano at the National Conservatory in Mexico, attended Berklee College of Music and New England Conservatory, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in Jazz Studies.

Since moving to New York City in 1999, Antonio has become one of the most sought-after drummers in the international jazz scene. Following 17 years as one of the most revered collaborators with guitarist / composer Pat Metheny, he also has recorded and performed with many other most prominent artists like Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Michael Brecker and Charlie Haden.

In 2014 Sanchez popularity soared when he scored Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) which ended up fetching 4 Academy awards and for which Antonio won a Grammy award. Additional film/tv projects include EPIX network's Get Shorty, Hippopotamus among others.

His recent projects to date include Grammy nominated “Bad Hombre” a socio-political electronica & drums exploration, “Channels of Energy” released this past year, an ambitious project with the WDR Big Band with arrangements of his works by Vince Mendoza and an upcoming release in January 2019 “Lines in the Sand” with his band Migration. In his 8th studio album as a leader Sanchez turns his political anger into a moving musical statement of epic compositional proportions as much a protest against injustice in our current political climate and as a tribute to every immigrant’s journey.

To date Antonio has been awarded 5 Grammy’s, nominations for Golden Globe & Bafta Awards, World Soundtrack New Artist Discovery and Best Original Film Score Award, 3 Echo Awards (Germany), Hollywood Music in Media Award, the Critics’ Choice Movie Award and Modern Drummer’s Jazz Drummer of the year (twice) among many other wins and nominations.
He has been the featured cover artist for Downbeat, Jazztimes, Jazzit, Modern Drummer (twice) and DRUM! just to name a few.

He currently resides in New York City.

I just watched Arturo's interview with Tiffany Cross' show on MSNBC. Music, including Afro/Latin and jazz in general have always been a big part of my life (as a fan; sadly, I'm not that talented) going back to when I was in HS in NYC. Very impressed re his efforts to boost the music and the players during these insane times, so I just made a donation. Least I can do...
