Is there a relationship between dry eye and allergies?

With seasonal allergies, symptoms may be very similar to dry eye, but the telltale sign is itchiness. When the eye is sensitive to an allergen such as pollen or pet dander, histamine is released, causing the eyes to itch, tear, and redden. Depending upon which condition is affecting your eyes, the treatment will vary.

Douglas K. Devries, OD co-founded Eye Care Associates of Nevada in 1992, and since then, has limited his practice to surgical co-management and diseases of the eye. His specific area of interest has been in ocular surface disease, which makes up the majority of his clinical practice. Dr. Devries lectures to colleagues extensively, both nationally and internationally, on anterior segment eye disease. He is the director of the optometric residency program and optometric fourth year intern program at Eye Care Associates and is an Associate Clinical Professor of Optometry.

What can you do if your eyes are tired and should you see an eye doctor?

Tired eyes can happen to anyone, even children who have not been exposed to screens. The effects can continue for hours after they start, and the more a person exposes their eyes to conditions that induce asthenopia, the worse the symptoms and effects will be. In cases like these, the symptoms will begin immediately after you start using your eyes for close vision, sometimes making it painful or even impossible to read, focus, or concentrate.

Dr. Josh Johnston is an optometrist, whose clinical focus is on ocular surface disease, including dry eye and other corneal diseases. His background reflects extensive experience co-managing surgical patients before and after LASIK, cataract and other advanced corneal and refractive surgical procedures. Dr. Johnston practices medical optometry and renders care for patients with many ocular diseases such as glaucoma, ocular injuries, keratoconus, diabetic retinopathy, uveitis, macular degeneration and various other systemic disease related ocular conditions.

What are some of the most popular treatment options for glaucoma patients?

New medications and treatment alternatives are changing the landscape of glaucoma management.

The medical management of glaucoma has been changing for many doctors and patients. New types of glaucoma medications have become available to patients, the use of selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) as first-line treatment is increasing, and several new, safer surgery options in the “micro-invasive glaucoma surgery” (MIGS) category have changed the traditional landscape of glaucoma management.

Dr. Justin Schweitzer is a fellowship-trained optometrist specializing in the treatment of glaucoma, anterior segment pathology and cataracts in Sioux Falls, SD. It was during his advanced anterior segment surgery care, pathology, and glaucoma residency at Vance Thompson Vision in 2013 when Dr. Schweitzer decided to practice full time at our facility. Now an adjunct clinical professor at The Illinois College of Optometry, Dr. Schweitzer is a national leader in the arenas of glaucoma, anterior segment surgery, anterior segment pathology and lectures to his colleagues nationwide.

Why is resting your eyes and blinking the most important activity for your eye health?

When we blink, we activate the Meibomian glands in our eyelids to release and spread essential protective oils across the tear film on the eye surface. A complete healthy blink at the proper frequency helps to maintain ocular surface health and to prevent Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

Partial and infrequent blinking are highly associated with reading and use of digital devices. Chronic use of digital devices can impair healthy gland function. Blink awareness and blink exercises can help our glands stay healthy with out giving up our digital devices.

Dr. Lang joined Associated Eye Care in 2006. He received his Doctor of Optometry degree from The New England College of Optometry in Boston, MA. He was a member of Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honor Society, and received several awards for excellence in patient care and contact lens expertise. Dr. Lang then completed a cornea and specialty contact lens residency in Boston, MA. Through this additional education, he gained expertise in dry eye and ocular diseases, therapeutic contact lenses and surgical co-management. Dr. Lang has been involved in dry eye clinical research and FDA trials for many years including medications and therapeutic devices.

What are some myths about tearing and dry eye disease? | EYE NEWS TV

Tear over-secretion is usually caused by irritation or inflammation of the surface of the eye. This can occur for a number of reasons, including eyelash and eyelid problems or allergies. Oddly, a dry eye problem can sometimes cause watery eyes, because the eye produces excess tears to combat the irritation and dryness.

Cecelia Koetting, OD | Virginia Eye Consultants

Since joining Virginia Eye Consultants in 2014, Dr. Koetting has become a locally and nationally known lecturer and author. With topics ranging from ocular disease, surgical co-management and neuro-optometry, she helps to educate other optometrists and their staff.

How common is ocular surface disease and glaucoma for patients?

So the question is, how common is ocular surface disease in the glaucoma population? And it varies. It'll depend on the demographics that are involved. The short answer is, it's much more than in the general population. Some statistics cite 50%, up to 80% of the of the glaucoma population has some form of ocular surface disease. And once again, it's really a spectrum of diseases.

PART 1: Hi, I'm John Hovanesian. And we're having today a conversation by remote video, with Jim Mazzo. Who is going to talk with me about the future of eye care. As we see ourselves emerge from the COVID epidemic.

"I would say that I'm equating to what's gonna happen in the practices as to what happened to the travel industry under the travesty of 911. And that it just transformed how we travel. And I think now it's gonna transform on how you see patients, how we interact with doctors. I think it's gonna be much more information before you walk in. I don't think the casual walk in visit, the bringing mom and dad into the room. All that is gonna happen, I think even the giving the handing a pen to your patient to fill out their form is gone. And sometimes I think it actually, when you transform because of a catastrophe or an issue, you actually make things better." Jim Mazzo

Why is learning about Dry Eye Disease important for doctors and patients?

Barry Linder, MD shares his view on the dry eye patient and
why the timing is right for home therapies.

Every day many people struggle with the symptoms of dry eye, often without realizing that what they’re experiencing are symptoms. Of course, dry, itchy or irritated eyes are all possible symptoms. But dry eye can also cause sensitivity to light, a foreign body sensation, and even short periods of excess tears. Stringy discharge, difficulty keeping the eyes open, and blurry vision are other common indicators.

PATIENT EDUCATION: What exactly is dry eye disease and how can i treat it?

Dry Eye Symptoms
Here are some of the symptoms of dry eye.

You feel like your eyes are stinging and burning.
Blurred vision, especially when reading
There is a scratchy or gritty feeling like something is in your eye.
There are strings of mucus in or around your eyes.
Your eyes are red or irritated. This is especially true when you are in the wind or near cigarette smoke.
It is painful to wear contact lenses.
You have lots of tears in your eyes.

Having a lot of tears in your eyes with dry eye might sound odd. But your eyes make more tears when they are irritated by dry eye.

People tend to make fewer tears as they get older due to hormonal changes. Both men and women can get dry eye. However, it is more common in women—especially those who have gone through menopause.

Also, If patients are struggling with the discomfort of dry eye syndrome or MGD, and you have exhausted other treatments with no success, it’s time to offer LipiFlow® to your patients. Don’t wait another day to help your patients get rid of itchy, dry, uncomfortable eyes.
