Achieving Immortality | John Berdahl & Alan Berdahl | TEDxSiouxFalls

Man's search for immortality is as old as man itself. We can't cheat death completely but we can cheat death a little by allowing a piece of ourselves to physically live on in others through organ donation. We discuss the medical, psychological and religious overtone associated with becoming a hero by becoming a donor. John Berdahl M.D. is an Eye Surgeon at Vance Thompson Vision in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and has performed over 25,000 surgeries He was recently named the #3 ophthalmologist in the world under age 50. He co-invented the MKO melt and has started 4 companies Astigmatismfix.com, Equinox, and ExpertOpinion.md, but what drives him is the trust patients, family, and friends place in him.

Alan Berdahl is an organ donation advocate and a bilateral cornea transplant recipient. Alan's background as an educator allows him to connect with drivers education students, as well as adults, about the importance of donation. As the Community Outreach Coordinator with Dakota Lions Sight & Health, his efforts have helped to raise awareness of organ donation and increase the number of designated donors in South Dakota dramatically. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.

Cataract surgery today is about gaining function back into your eyes.

Regarding premium lens implants for cataract surgery.

Recovery from cataract surgery is the same whether you receive a monofocal lens or a multifocal lens. The number of appointments before and after surgery is also the same. The brain must adjust, however, to the new optical system created with the multifocal lens. This neural adaptation takes from weeks to months to occur. Patients typically notice that they become less aware of their vision as this neural adaptation takes place.

Cataract surgery is a chance to get new eyes, how is this possible?

EYE NEWS TV PATIENT EDUCATION:

How do you treat cataracts?

In a cataract operation, the eye’s natural lens is removed. Vision can then be obtained by implanting a permanent intraocular lens (IOL), which replaces the natural lens. This artificial lens is made of plastic and is usually inserted at the same time the cataract is removed. Depending on the individual case, the lens is placed directly behind or, less frequently, in front of the iris, the “colored” part of the eye.

There have been remarkable advances in the treatment of cataracts, namely in the use of premium lenses (IOLs) that not only help make vision clearer but can also help improve near and far vision. Often patients that select these lenses do not need to use their glasses anymore.

Blink patterns for millennials, generation Z are disruptive to eye health.

The average person blinks 15-20 times per minute, or about 1,200 times per hour. So why do we sweep our eyelids over our eyeballs so much? Because it’s incredibly beneficial for your eyes and health.

Why do we have to blink?

Although you may not thinking of blinking as a major component of your health care routine, if you didn’t blink for extended periods you’d be at higher risk of eye infection, would have uncomfortable, dry eyes, and would have decreased clarity of vision. The most important benefit of blinking is that it cleans the surface of your eye of any debris and washes it out with fresh tears. The coating of tears helps sharpen your vision, clearing and brightening the image your retina receives. Blinking also nourishes your eye with oxygen and nutrients, keeping your eyes healthy and comfortable.

Why we need to keep blinking to prevent dry eye disease

Although researchers have long known about age, sex, and gender as factors, they are now discovering ethnic and racial differences, and that dry eye impacts younger patients. It can have many causes, including environmental exposure; side-effects from medications; eye surgery; lid disorders; autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren’s syndrome, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis; contact lens wear; cosmetic use; aesthetic procedures; and an increasingly common cause— staring at computer or smartphone screens for too long without blinking.

There's a body of research showing that painkiller abuse and overdose are lower in states with medical marijuana laws. These studies have generally assumed that when medical marijuana is available, pain patients are increasingly choosing pot over powerful and deadly prescription narcotics. But that's always been just an assumption.

Now a new study, released in the journal Health Affairs, validates these findings by providing clear evidence of a missing link in the causal chain running from medical marijuana to falling overdoses. Ashley and W. David Bradford, a daughter-father pair of researchers at the University of Georgia, scoured the database of all prescription drugs paid for under Medicare Part D from 2010 to 2013.
