Really good drum samples:
When we first sit down to build a track, most of us start with the drums. You wouldn't build your house on a lousy foundation, so you shouldn't build your tracks on a one either. Elements is the perfect set of building blocks to create chart-topping hits in today's music. With over 500 samples, over...

Big thanks to Solid State Logic (SSL) for fixing my Duality console literally 3 hours after I discovered there was a problem. You really provide incredibly responsive and helpful technical support and service. I'm so glad to have such a professional and capable team standing behind the tool I use every day and is the principal centerpiece of my whole studio. Thank you so much!

So excited to see this song see the light of day.
Is this the best original vintage space sex soundtrack song ever written? Here’s a little secret, an invitation to experience a seriously insanely great track from Signal, a musical duo based in Brooklyn, NYC.
Signal are Krychek and Alex Sterling.
They sound to us like the Blade Runner soundtrack was accidentally fused with some Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis outtakes …..slick, melodic, happysad, synthtastic orchestrations with otherworldly yet insanely addictive vocal laments….it's sophisticated pop music for our modern age. Pink Floyd meets Human League perhaps….but let’s not reduce them to soundbite simplicities.
Sure we’re slightly biased - but the slower, cinematic tour de force “F**king In A Spaceship” is simply in our opinion one of the tracks of the year, replete with widescreen depth and existential beauty. Very few musical pieces can claim to inhabit the philosophical miasmas of Stanley Kubrick or Philip K Dick, somehow evoking the complicated dialectal possibilities of otherworldly and interstellar love/sex….the mind boggles, but there’s no denying the incredible beauty of this track. It asks many questions of our human possibilities, but the ultimate message is one of sublime love.
If you give this track any serious attention, your mind will be blown. If Signal do nothing else, they have created 4 minutes of transcendent existential musical genius that PB are proud to make available to the universe.

I'm pleased to share that I contributed to this article on Sonic Scoop about music references for speaker system calibration and stylistic reference. Check it out:
As music evolves, reference tracks do too. Everybody in music production knows that reference tracks are an essential tool for getting ears oriented within a critical listening environment. While some songs will never go out of style, new ones must constantly enter the canon to account for changing…
I did something fun on a project today. I did a mix without using any plugins at all except the couple delays the client had left in the session.
I didn't look at the DAW at all except to route tracks to the console initially and to loop sections as I mixed.
I made a couple minor fader adjustments to sub mixed stems ITB but everything else was completely processed on the console and with a tiny bit of outboard here and there:
1 stereo parallel compression and EQ chain, 2 mono parallel compression chains, 1 chorus send, 1 hall verb send, 1 room verb send, and 1 plate verb send.
Mixbus was the Bax EQ doing a tiny smiley face and hipass filter and the Pendulum PL2 analog peak limiter.
And I gotta say, limiting the tool set to just the basics made a really big difference in my approach. I really had to get the EQ right on every track because I couldn't lean on multiband or dynamic EQ surgery, I really leaned on the channel comps a lot more than usual, and I didn't use too much reverb like I often am known to do...
All in all I really had a lot of fun and learned a lot about getting the most out of a fixed tool set without infinite choices. I recommend all my mixer friends try something like this.
Also the mix came out great.
Here are Rupert Wates, Kirsten Maxwell, and Stacey Lorin Merkl performing Rupert's song, 'The Day The Great Ship Went Down', live at Alex Sterling's Precision Sound Studios on New York's Upper West Side, March 20 2017. The eloquent and skillful #songwriter and #guitarist #RupertWates came by the studio to track a bunch of songs for a new album as well as a live in the studio video.
I'm getting nerdy with some calculations for the next big renovation here at Precision Sound. Calculating SBIR interference comb filtering to optimize speaker placement and acoustic treatment. This is all in pursuit of the most accurate and clear monitoring so we can deliver the best possible sound quality to our clients.
Loving my new TC Clarity M external meter for hitting target levels and dynamic range standards. Especially useful for post production and mastering.
It was a pleasure to host writer, musician, and arranger Ahamefule J. Oluo at the studio for a portion of this video interview where he talks about his life experience and the path towards musical and theatrical success.

I'm very happy to announce that Sonic Scoop has done another in depth profile of Precision Sound Studios which really dives deep into some of the issues facing studios and the recording industry at large. You can read the article and see some great photos of the space here:
Sometimes all there is to rebrand is just a name change – some new words, and nothing bigger. That’s not the case with Precision Sound Studios, the Upper West Side audio facility that once simply went by the name of its founder, Alex Sterling. But this busy room just keeps raising its game, and with...

I recently finished putting together a custom rolling MIDI controller and Nord Drum sidecar. The setup also includes a Hot Key Matrix for esoteric ProTools commands. This allows me or guest producers the ability to control soft synths and play the drum pads right from the console sweetspot, but it can be rolled out of the way when working on the console itself. I'm always very focused on equipment ergonomics because I believe that when things are easy and comfortable to use, you use them more, and you use them with greater results.
I'm pleased to bring your attention to this article about the very special installation of Sommer Mistral cable in my studio. The entire studio was wired with AES/EBU spec cable both to simplify patching/running digital AES/EBU signals but also for its extremely wide bandwidth sound quality which preserves high frequency detail even with complex long run patching to outboard gear.

Mix it loud and proud! Don't worry about the meters until you need to. Took me a long time to get my head ok with seeing things light up like a Christmas tree.
Starting the mixing for the new album from Lynx. Ten seconds in and I'm already jumping around the studio.
I'm pleased to announce that I am now using a Solid State Logic Duality analog console as the heart of the studio setup. This thing sounds amazing.
It is a great honor and privilege to have been able to work with Susan Campos and Julián de la Chica on their new conceptual album "Minimal Aggression". The album recently was included on a list of the most important releases of 2015 by Costa Rican newspaper "Nacion". I had the pleasure of recording, mixing, and mastering the project here in NYC at my studio, Precision Sound.
