Nils Lofgren: 50 years of ‘just being a guy in the band’

On the occasion of his 50th anniversary in the music business, #NilsLofgren speaks to Tom Casciato about how as a teenager he used to sneak backstage to meet musicians he admired; how #RoyBuchanan taught him to use harmonics in his lead guitar lines; how he made a crucial contribution to the recording of #NeilYoung's #SouthernMan; and how #BruceSpringsteen & the #EstreetBand resuscitated his career. He also reveals the advice he'd give now to his 17-year-old self if he only could.

As we learned a few years ago in the Oscar-winning film “20 Feet from Stardom,” sometimes the best singers in the band are those who are seldom center-stage....

There's now an FB page for In the footsteps of Marco Polo, an Emmy-nominated film (with accompanying book) that Okapi's Tom Casciato did with Francis O'Donnell, Denis Belliveau, Emir Lewis, Daniel Baer, and others. The film is about a remarkable and often dangerous journey O'Donnell and Belliveau took trying to trace the explorer's purported path through the Middle East and Asia, trying to prove for themselves that Polo actually did everything that he wrote he did. It's streaming here.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF MARCO POLO, premiering on public television beginning November 2008 (check local listings), chronicles the journey of two ordinary guys – Belliveau, at the time a wedding photographer, and O’Donnell, an artist and former Marine – as they set out to follow Polo’s historic route. Watch This: Two American Families | The Nation

Greg Kauffman reviews TWO AMERICAN FAMILIES in The Nation magazine: "Produced by filmmakers Tom Casciato and Kathleen Hughes, Two American Families is the third must-see documentary in the past year—along with American Winter and A Place at the Table— about how regular folks' are surviving in today’s economy. Watch it, and if your blood isn't boiling by the end, check your pulse."

Before there was the Great Recession, the foreclosure crisis, and the obscene economic divide that we see today, there was a gathering storm. Bill Moyers began to capture it in 1991, documenting two families in Milwaukee—the Neumans and the Stanleys—as they strived to attain the American Dream: a m...

Exposing ALEC's Agenda to Defund and Dismantle Public Education

"UNITED STATES OF ALEC" featured in Huffington Post:

“Iron Man 3 just opened this past weekend, followed soon by more would-be blockbusters. I’m sure a lot of these movies will be entertaining, but none will be more important or relevant than a half-hour documentary I recently watched: The United States of ALEC.“

A simple fact of business: You have to spend money to make money. And those who want to privatize education are willing to spend lots of money and effort to push their agenda. One of the main ways they are doing this is through ALEC.
