Three months after the death of George Floyd at the hands of police spurred national unrest and widespread reforms, America's racial reckoning exploded when Jacob Blake was shot seven times in the back by a White officer.
So another law suit proving the systemic culture of violence that is at the fabric of this NYC "Torture Island" - Rikers Island. Another tragedy. Another beautiful innocent life taken unjustly, criminally. Our condolences continue to go out to the family of this Latinx Trans Woman, Layleen Polanco. RIP.

Special Guest: Professor Hedwig Lee
Throughout the past year, AFJ has been collaborating with the Center for Urban Pedagogy’s Making Policy Public project to develop a beautifully-designed poster about the importance of civic engagement among directly-impacted families and communities. We are thrilled that the poster is ready to launch! Please join us on Zoom this Wednesday, July 29 at 6 pm for the official poster launch, and for a very special conversation with Professor Hedwig Lee about increasing civic engagement in our communities. Professor Lee’s groundbreaking research on how justice system involvement negatively impacts civic engagement of the whole family, is the basis on which we have built our civic engagement work. We are honored that she will be in attendance to share her knowledge! We will also hear from a few of our amazing community partners.
Thank you so much to CUP and to the AFJ volunteers who spent many hours developing this beautiful and engaging poster!

"Join NYC Transformative Justice Hub and RAPP Campaign for "Rooted in Resistance"
Dear partners,
This Saturday, July 25 from 12 to 2 pm, the last session of the NYC Transformative Justice Hub's pilot year will include a conversation with our partners, the Release Aging People in Prison (RAPP) Campaign, around their work to release older people and those serving long sentences from prison. Speakers include Jose Hamza Saldana, the director of RAPP, and Laura Whitehorn, co-founder and organizer with RAPP, as well as other formerly incarcerated community organizers.
The New York City Transformative Justice Hub was created to provide support, political education, and connectivity for anyone interested in transformative justice and those already actively engaged in the work. Our Program Director Cameron Rasmussen is a member of the Hub's Steering Committee as a part of his work focused on ending the punishment paradigm and advancing approaches to justice rooted in prevention, healing, and accountability. We invite you to join us in supporting the work of the NYC Transformative Justice Hub and the RAPP Campaign by registering for the event below."

We received this communication and wanted to share:
"We’re heartbroken over the loss of Congressman John Lewis. The world has lost a legend; the civil rights movement has lost an icon and the Congressional Black Caucus has lost its longest serving member. To many of us, he was family. We -- the nation, the City of Atlanta, the State of Georgia and the United States Congress -- are suffering the loss of a giant.Congressman Lewis was in the fight for justice right until the very end. His steadfast dedication to civility and humanity were invaluable.Mr. Lewis was born and raised the son of sharecroppers in Troy, Alabama, a segregated town of the Deep South. At an early age, he was inspired by the non-violent activism of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his leadership of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. This passion drove Mr. Lewis to dedicate himself and his life to the Civil Rights Movement.John Lewis was one of the “Big 6” leaders of the historical March on Washington. He was the youngest speaker to address the hundreds of thousands marching for jobs and freedom that day. He played a key role in the marches from Selma to Montgomery, a campaign against the blatant voter suppression of Black citizens. He joined Hosea Williams and hundreds of civil rights marchers to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge on “Bloody Sunday” and suffered a fractured skull that day for the right of Black people to register and vote. We’ll always remember his spirit. We’ll carry forward his legacy of getting into good trouble. And we’ll never stop fighting for equity and justice. We hope you’ll take a moment today to think about him, his contributions to our country, and channel that energy to pursue a more just America. We are sending our sincere condolences to his family during this trying time and praying for all of those affected by his life and legacy.
Sincerely,
The Congressional Black Caucus PAC"
On The Count sends our condolences and salute to one of ours who "faught the good fight." RIP.
""Dear Friends,
I am appealing to you all at this time to rally around the Correctional Association of New York (CANY) as we fight to gain more access and oversight authority over New York prisons. Right now, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change independent oversight of prisons in New York State. As COVID-19 continues to sweep through our prisons and endanger the health and lives of people who are incarcerated there, New York prisons need oversight and accountability measures more than ever before.
On Tuesday, a bill which would strengthen CANY’s legislative authority to monitor prisons moved out of the Corrections Committee in the New York State Assembly. Join us in calling on our elected representatives to pass S8046/A10194 and expand our authority to monitor prison conditions. Click here for details.
As my colleagues and I wrote in the Daily News last month, this prison oversight bill should be considered as the next logical step on the path to transparency and accountability following the repeal of Civil Rights Law 50-a, which allowed law enforcement to shield misconduct records.
You know my passion and commitment to this cause. I experienced abuse during my 27 years of incarceration and I have vowed to stay on the case until there is real change in the way incarcerated people are treated. CANY is one of only three independent oversight organizations that monitor prisons at the state level. With so few organizations empowered to hold prisons to account, it is no wonder that Black, Brown and poor people continue to face abuse and mistreatment while incarcerated.
We are grateful to our champions in the Assembly, and we are now seeking even more support from our allies on the Senate side. Please give us the support you know we need at this hour to ensure that we can provide oversight as the COVID-19 pandemic sweeps through prisons. Our time is now. Demand that the prison oversight bill S8046/A10194 be passed and signed into law by calling your representative today."
Event:
"We’re one week away from "Brutality Behind Bars: Accountability for Corrections Officers, Too,” our panel and call to action on ending brutality inside New York’s jails and prisons.
The stories of inhumane treatment that fueled the movement and the heartbreaking deaths of Layleen Polanco, Jamel Floyd, Kalief Browder, and countless other Black and Brown people behind bars in New York, have shed light on violence that occurs everyday at the hands of corrections officers, but is largely shielded from the public. Additionally, solitary confinement continues to inflict a lasting mental and emotional toll on too many lives in New York.
As calls to reform the NYPD continue, we must also galvanize energy towards achieving accountability and transparency for corrections officers, and ensure that the voices of people inside are heard.
We hope you’ll join us next Monday, 7/20 from 1-2:15 pm to learn about solutions and ways to take action with the following experts and leaders:
● Jai Diamond, New York City Criminal Justice Agency
● Assemblyman David Weprin, Chair of the Committee on Corrections
● Karen Murtagh, Executive Director of Prisoners' Legal Services
● Donna Hylton, Executive Director of A Little Piece of Light
● Phillip Miller, Associate Director of Policy at Correctional Association of New York

Please tune-in tonight at 9:00 PM for a very important discussion on "Restorative Justice" and "Healing Circles" for those on both sides of harm. During these very difficult times, we think it's vital that we, as a Community, talk about our experiences - our shared experiences - and support the healing process. Resiliency is the human trait that is accessible to us all and we ask that you all share your resiliency with us along with your pain, if you like, and together we will get through. We don't profess to have all the answers but one thing we know for sure is that we heal as a community - a loving community.
