Happy Oscars Sunday

02/26/2016

This Sunday, Chris Rock will be hosting the 88th Academy Awards, so naturally it's prediction time. 2015 was a decent year for film, but in regard to award season, it's been a pretty boring race among the big categories. Don't expect too many shockers.

My Predictions:

Best Picture
My Pick to Win: The Revenant
Who Should Win: Brooklyn/Spotlight
Thoughts: The Revenant is a virtual lock in a few other categories, it has momentum on its side, but Best Picture has been a three horse race. Unfortunately it seems like The Revenant is starting to pull ahead, even though it legitimately is not even in the top five amongst the other films nominated. Brooklyn and Spotlight are my two favorite films of the year and were infinitely better than the wilderness saga featuring all the natural light and vicious bear attacks. The Revenant isn’t even the best “dystopian” all-alone, finding a way home film nominated, since Ridley Scott’s The Martian was much better crafted, and funnier to boot.

Best Actor
My Pick to Win: Leonardo DiCaprio
Thoughts: It’s a weak field and Leo will finally get his long awaited golden statue. Frankly, he should have won for his performance as Jordan Belfort a few years ago, but the time has come.

Best Actress
My pick to win: Brie Larson
Who Should Win: Saoirse Ronan
Thoughts: Can’t go wrong with Larson, she’s a star in the making and her performance as a mother, trapped in a room with her son was devastating. Kudos also go out to Jacob Tremblay who was just as impressive as little Jack. Ronan’s performance was my favorite of the year, she’s someone I’ve had an eye on since she starred in Hanna, and Brooklyn allowed her to shine bright.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role
My Pick to Win: Sylvester Stallone
Who Should Win: Mark Ruffalo
Thoughts: I don’t have a problem, at all, with Stallone winning. He was amazing in Creed, and propelled the film to new heights. Ruffalo was DAMN GOOD in Spotlight and I feel he isn’t getting the necessary props he deserves for a powerful performance in an amazing film.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role
My Pick to Win: Alicia Vikander
Who Should Win: Kate Winslet

Best Director
My Pick to Win: Alejandro G. Iñárittu
Who Should Win: Tom McCarthy
Thoughts: This category will soon be renamed after Alejandro G. Iñárittu. The Revenant is a great looking film, and deserves the praise from a technical and visual aspect. Iñárittu is brilliant, there’s no denying that.

Best Cinematography
My Pick to Win: Emmanuel Lubezki
Should Win: Roger Deakins
Thoughts: Just like Director, it should be named after someone, there’s no better cinematographer in Hollywood right now than Roger Deakins. He made Sicario flow so seamlessly, but Lubezki is a package deal with Iñárittu, so this makes sense.

Deadpool was really great. Second favorite Marvel film after Guardians of the Galaxy. Laughed my ass off!

After finally seeing both, Room and Brooklyn tonight, I'm pretty confident that the top 2 movies of 2015 officially are Spotlight and Brooklyn. Room is fantastic as well.
