Marlon Brando interview on Dick Cavett show

Was chatting about this on Instagram: Brando being interviewed by Dick Cavett in the early '70s. It's a bit awkward at first -- Brando hates interviews -- but once they get into a groove, it turns into a lucid, sustained conversation about acting, race, celebrity, and white privilege in Hollywood. For context, Brando had recently sent a Native American woman to accept his Academy Award; she was booed offstage.

Pictorialism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pictorialism is the name given to an international style and aesthetic movement that dominated photography during the later 19th and early 20th centuries. There is no standard definition of the term, but in general it refers to a style in which the photographer has somehow manipulated what would oth…

I talk about Spotify so much, people think I work there. I don’t—yet—but I’m a big fan. There isn’t a better way to discover, share and listen to music. Yes, I assume the ads are intentionally bad....

Not gonna lie, I've been holding on to this one for a while. It's too good, too comfy, too me. Didn't want you spoiling it. But if, like me, you prefer Monday night to Friday night, I suppose you're invited to The Shanty.

Why We Panic When Women Use Technology to Meet Men and Have Sex

Game been strong.

In 1860s Manhattan, young men and women in search of some excitement could duck into a little stationery shop uptown, open the unmarked notebook on the counter, and scribble a message to all the other strangers who were in on the secret. When the New York society writer George Ellington...

The End

Well this sucks. This was, like, the website for casually but informatively jawing off about movies, and now it's gone. Most of the writers/editors came over from the A.V. Club, back when it was worth a daily read, then Pitchfork gave them some impressively large space to do what they wanted. Too bad it didn't work out. It rarely does!

Today The Dissolve says farewell.

WATCH: THE THIRD MAN

MOVIE NIGHT

One of my favorite Coen brothers movies isn’t a Coen brothers movie at all. It’s called The Third Man, and it came out in 1949, before the bros were even born. It’s got everything the Coens want—a perfect soundtrack, quirky characters....

The best.

Arthur Russell’s legacy, in 2015, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of musical experimentation.
