Who Do You Owe for Your Love of Photography?

Love articles like this, ones that make you look at your own life in retrospect. In my case I was turned on to photography at summer camp when I was thirteen years old, by Andrew Schupack at Camp Becket in Becket, Massachusetts. I’d always loved hobbies that were a process, like the chemistry lab that I built in my basement (and almost burned down the house using according to my family). Learning how to make photograms in the darkroom where you lay various objects on photo paper and expose the paper under an enlarger was enlightening (no pun intended). Half a century later I’m still in love with the process and hopefully, still learning.

Have you traced back your interest in photography and the arts to its origin? What or who was the catalyst?

Getty to Quit Rights-Managed Creative Stock Business | PDNPulse

Getty does it again! Continuing the downward spiral of the stock photography business (as if if could sink any further) Getty Images says it’s discontinuing it’s Rights Managed (RM) business in favor of Royalty Free (RF).

When I started licensing imagery (1993) through SIPA, then Photonica, photographers were earning 50% of the license fee, there was no such thing as royalty free or micro stock, all rights were managed (ie if you needed an image for a cover of a book you l licensed the image for that particular use). Getty Images went on a buying spree and bought out numerous stock agencies, consolidating the business into two giant rival stock agencies (Getty Images and Corbis) and with their new market control started offering photographer’s contracts with smaller and smaller percentages. By 2011 I’d had enough, their newest contract would allow them to make any RM image into RF at their discretion and as it would cheapen the value of my images and I couldn’t live with that. I still license images through RM agencies Trevillion and Alamy but regrettably, their market control is a mere fraction of what Getty’s is.

Getty Images has informed contributors that the company plans to phase out its rights-managed (RM) image licensing business, and focus on its royalty-free (RF) image licensing business. The change will take place in early 2020, according to Getty. Getty’s Editorial images—a division that encompa...

See How the Shadows of New York Create a Second City

In the linked article the NY Times explores what they call the second city, the shadow city. For years I did street photography with Kodak’s B&W Infrared film which accentuated shadows and often blew out highlights. Armed with that film I searched out strong light, actual subjects occasionally became secondary, it was the light, always the light.

Gigi Hadid, Heroine of the Copyright Revolution? (Guest Column)

This case has been winding its way through the news for a while. It’s an interesting situation, old laws don’t always meet the needs of a new world.

Co-authorship of paparazzi pics could be a win-win for stars and photographers and bring an end to a rash of litigation arising from social media posts of unlicensed images.
