Mission: It goes without saying that the presence of African Americans in the high fashion publications is minuscule. With the emergence of online fashion magazines MAMA.com, a New York based publication is the premier black high fashion, beauty and lifestyle magazine. MAURICE MAUREEN (MAMA) is a publication that combines high fashion trends and photography for both men and women. From streetwear, to catwalk trends, to must haves of the season, and pieces of advice from fashion industry insiders, the African presence is felt in every article. The magazine incorporates black models of every shade from every corner of the globe as well as other ethnicities and seeks to show fashion as a global entity. Topics such as "Shop: Back to School/Work Essentials," "Beauty: Getting Hair Extensions 101," Music, and lifestyle articles makes MAMA a well rounded feature packed must have magazine. It also highlights various fashion weeks in America, Africa and Europe as well, and displays elaborate fashions from across the globe. Issues also included Black models who have been modeling for the more popular brands such as Joan Smalls and Alec Wec who can be seen modeling Givenchy, Prada, Valentino, Jean-Paul Gautier and other brands. When people think of Africa they don't think glam. But MAMA shows that Africa like every country has versatility and beauty. MAMA knows that clothes are beautiful and dynamic. This magazine is a drink of cool water; its nice to see black women and men on a fashion pedestal." MAMA is the brainchild of Maurice Marquis Milles Mansa a professional photographer and cinematographer, painter, philosopher, scientist, writer, traveler, and public figure. A prolific artist who has created thousands of photographic prints, murals, and paintings. Primarily a fashion photographer, documentary photographer, and web publisher, Mr.MAMA as he is known has a photographic style that is a mix of classical Greek sculpture, combined with provocative, erotically charged surrealism. He created the magazine because he felt that black people were being underrepresented in the fashion industry and wanted to full-fill his dream of producing a lasting contribution to the African diaspora. "I saw a void in the fashion journalism publication realm in regards to black people and other minorities," said Mansa. "And the fact that there aren't a lot of us portrayed heavily in Vogue or Vanity Fair is appalling. I really wanted to do something about this. Blacks are and have always been a major part of fashion." Maurice Mansa has always wanted to create a fashion publication so after teaming up with a friends from his photography career he parlayed his industry connections and finally created MAMA. "We did photo shoots and everything started happening and coming together all at once,". The magazine showcases urban wear from local designers and boutiques. It also encompasses commentary on relationships with topics ranging from "Never Have I Ever" to "Dating Tips," music and entertainment, insider fashion gossip, and health and beauty tips. "I would like for young people to embrace a more young, diverse, and cultural perspective of the fashion industry,".
