"[This is] a supreme moment for the United States and its democracy.
The moment of silence we need to observe for Justice Ginsburg is loud and ominous with uncertainty about what the US will become, not just as a country and a political system, but most of all, as a society." —Herman Portocarero

Review | Life’s humor and heartbreak, and the joy of putting it into words

Evan Thomas reviews our latest book, Roger Rosenblatt's THE STORY I AM, in The Washington Post.

Please support independent bookstores and publishers by picking up this book, or pretty much any book, right here:
https://bookshop.org/books/the-story-i-am-mad-about-the-writing-life/9781885983787?aid=1291

"Rosenblatt’s writing brims with creativity and insight . . . His knack, as I recall from my days at TIME, was to see what everyone else saw, only, somehow, more clearly and more movingly." Says Rosenblatt: "[A]fter witnessing enough pain and plain courage in the world, I . . . started writing about the life before my eyes.' In “The Story I Am,” that life is on vivid display."

In his new collection, longtime author Roger Rosenblatt calls writing an “adventure.”

ANOTHER COUNTRY

In his blog post "Another Country," career diplomat, former ambassador, and Turtle Point author Herman Portocarero questions the absence of black leadership and the urgent need for new leadership during this point of crisis.

The title of James Baldwin’s 1962 novel often comes to my mind as summing up the collective feelings of alienation experienced by many African-Americans individually and Black communities col…

Carolyn Reidy, the Head of Simon & Schuster, Is Dead at 71

Another publishing great, lost too soon. RIP, Carolyn Reidy.

Ms. Reidy once described herself as a “meddler,” because she enjoyed being involved in every aspect of the company. But Jonathan Karp, the president and publisher of Simon & Schuster’s adult publishing, said he had seen things differently.
"By showing us that she cared about the smallest details,” he said in an interview, “she wanted all of us to care about the smallest details, because she knew that those details can often be the reason a book succeeds.”

Taking the helm in 2008, she steered the publishing house, one of the Big Five, through a deep recession and a digital revolution.

HEROIC by Eavan Boland

Sex and history. And skin and bone.
And the oppression of Sunday afternoon.
Bells called the faithful to devotion.

I was still at school and on my own.
And walked and walked and sheltered from the rain.

The patriot was made of drenched stone.
His lips were still speaking. The gun
he held had just killed someone.

I looked up. And looked at him again.
He stared past me without recognition.

I moved my lips and wondered how the rain
would taste if my tongue were made of stone.
And wished it was. And whispered so that no one
could hear it but him. Make me a heroine.
