Check out Alex Higley's "Cardinal" as one of the Pen America Literary Awards Longlist candidates! Seems like a very short list to us, and very well deserved.

2017 Brooklyn Book Festival, here we come......keep an eye out for announcements--Tailwinds Press has made a reservation to be at the Sept 2017 Brooklyn Book Festival. We first were there in 2015, and now plan to be back this year.

According to Publishers Weekly, sales of print books increased by 5.4 percent from 2014 to 2015. Adult fiction: a 2.1 percent increase year over year. This is the first time since 2010 "that unit sales in adult fiction rose year over year." Not bad.

Is the downhill slide in eBooks continuing? We haven't seen those numbers yet, but sales are presumed to be continuing to slow in growth. Some of that is due to people returning to real, physical books. Of course part of this may be the fact that eBooks are going up in price due to recent agreements between Amazon and the big 5 publishers.

While we continue to support eBooks at Tailwinds Press, we are all physical book readers here.

Amazon's supply/distribution/sales process for print on demand books published by an outside party is "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma."

Kinda Sorta American Dream: Collected Stories

Barnes and Noble may not be your corner indie bookstore, but at least they are a physical brick and mortar presence, one that is becoming harder and harder to find in this 24/7 on-line era of Amazon. Steve Karas' new book can be found there in both print and Nook versions.

Or you can of course order directly from our website (print only), or on Amazon. Apple iBooks should be an option as well.

Kinda Sorta American Dream, by Steve Karas

Coming this December, Steve Karas' collection of short stories, "Kinda Sorta American Dream."

“With his timely debut collection, 'Kinda Sorta American Dream', Steve Karas announces himself as an exciting voice of immense breadth and literary talent. The masterful title story alone is worth the price of admission, but all of the fourteen stories here shimmer with compassion, intelligence, wit, and grace. From a social worker in a new high school to a Santa-in-training, a toy collector to a disaffected teen, Karas inhabits his wide array of characters with eerie accuracy. Filled with ache and longing, these keenly drawn portraits afford Karas a sharp look at the founding promise of our country, a bleak skewed shadow of its once bloated self, but not without a future of possibility or hope.” - Sara Lippmann, author of Doll Palace

Issue #24 of Ginosko Literary Journal now online, GinoskoLiteraryJournal.com
Three weeks ago, I was joined by Scott Sell, Jason Lesaldo, Genevieve Johnson, and Mariah Bergeron at SPACE for a live performance of work from or associated with my new book, *Blue of the World,* published by Tailwinds Press. Afterward, I took the audio from that event, trimmed it down, and paired it with expanded footage from the various projections running throughout the night. This is the result. Watch, share, weep, repeat. And thanks!

Thrilled to share with Longreads a book I loved last year that I thought everyone should read this year. My pick: "The Love Life of an Assistant Animator & Other Stories" by Katherine Vaz / Tailwinds Press. Go pick up your copy today! "I so loved the quiet melancholy and quirky charm threaded through the stories in this collection. Katherine Vaz, author of two novels (Saudade and Mariana) as well as two prior short story collections, has created characters and worlds in this book which form a marvelous tapestry that I felt lucky to see. Through her lyrical snapshots of the lives of these people — a widowed DMV worker dealing with an angry stalker, an aging ballerina, a maker of melting ice sculptures, a Hollywood assistant animator with his own obsession — we see both the frissons and the fractures that carve up our daily lives. And we’re left the richer for it." https://longreads.com/2018/01/16/ten-books-to-read-in-2018/

The cover mock-up for "Girl & Flame" is here! Laura Ellen Scott says this novella is "a startling love story about madness that is, at turns, both crude and courtly." She is also the author of the chapbook "The Distance Between Us" (Red Bird Chapbooks). Her work has appeared in decomP, Prick of the Spindle, and Northwind, among others.
