Lightning, captured on the wrist.

The new MING × J.N. Shapiro 37.06 Lightning brings together two independent watchmakers and two distinct forms of handwork, pairing a handmade “Lightning guilloché” titanium dial by J.N. Shapiro with heat-coloring by Ming Thein. Each dial is individually engine-turned by hand, then transformed by torch into a unique field of blue, purple, and orange-yellow tones, with no paint, lacquer, or added coating.

With only about one in three dials making the cut, no two examples are exactly alike. Lightning, after all, never strikes twice.

Oris is honoring one of baseball’s defining figures with the new Lou Gehrig Limited Edition, a 2,130-piece take on the Big Crown Pointer Date created in support of The Lou and Eleanor Gehrig Family Foundation.

Launched for Lou Gehrig Day, the watch brings a restrained series of references to the New York Yankees legend, from its silver “Iron Horse”-inspired dial and Yankees-blue accents to the blue number 4 on the date track, honoring Gehrig’s retired uniform number. The caseback continues the tribute with an engraving of Gehrig delivering his farewell speech at Yankee Stadium.

Limited to 2,130 numbered pieces in reference to Gehrig’s consecutive-games record, the Oris Lou Gehrig Limited Edition is priced at CHF 2,400.

From the Vulcain Cricket and Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox to modern chiming travel alarms from Blancpain and Patek Philippe, the alarm watch remains one of horology’s most practical — and collectible — complications. Head to the site to read our spotlight on the unique complication and the watches that chime.

It goes to show that watches don’t need to be over-the-top to get your attention.

This Hommage La Placide was introduced last year, but we got to finally see it in person last month in Geneva. It’s a homage to the brand’s earliest days with the signature retrograde complications and comparatively restrained designs of the time. At an eminently wearable 38mm with a solid dial and retrograde perpetual calendar executed in captivating style, a lot of watch fans would love to see more like it from the brand. It more or less serves as the smaller, “heritage” version of this year’s retrograde perpetual calendar in the Excalibur collection we shared here a couple days ago.

Q: Restrained homage? Or modern Excalibur?? 💬👇
