AJ+

Watch out latest story for AJ+, produced and edited by Julia Muldavin.

This piece was filmed in May, but undocumented communities continue to face some of the greatest risks as the COVID-19 pandemic spreads across other parts of the country.

First, these sisters lost their jobs. Then, they lost their brother and father. Now, they worry about paying hospital bills and finding food.

Even during COVID-19, most undocumented immigrants can't access federal government benefits like unemployment, food stamps or health care. Instead, they have to rely on food donations just to survive.

Check out our latest dispatch on COVID-19 in New York in collaboration with Mediakite. This time, we report on how the pandemic is affecting the unhoused community and how authorities continue to fail in providing safe long-term housing for those most in need.

If you can help, contribute to the #HomelessCantStayHome campaign: https://www.homelesscantstayhome.org

Thank you to Picture the Homeless, CHiPS Soup Kitchen & Women's Shelter and to Marcus, Alan and Erii for sharing their stories.

During New York City’s COVID-19 outbreak, the government failed to provide safe shelter and basic goods for the more than 60,000 New Yorkers who don’t have a permanent residence.

In a city held hostage by real estate interests, we spoke with the working class people who have been forced into the streets and into unsafe shelters throughout an unprecedented public health crisis.

This is the last weekend to stream selected films from the Awen Films archives for free. Our top pick for this last call is Treasure, the tale of a town trying to reinvent itself that may hold some lessons for our current times:

► Treasure – The Story of Marcus Hook [2013] // 20 min.
• English: https://vimeo.com/178927898
• Italian: https://vimeo.com/98953755
Marcus Hook is a small refinery town close to Philadelphia. For decades, oil was the community’s bread and butter. In December 2011, when the Sunoco refinery shut down, the town was left on the brink of an unprecedented crisis. Renovating his house, ex-refinery worker Michael Manerchia found the remains of a plankhouse belonging, according to local lore, to the pirate Blackbeard’s mistress. This unexpected discovery gave Michael the inspiration to create a pirate festival to bring business back to the town. "Treasure" chronicles the efforts of a community determined to survive deindustrialization. The town’s future is being written as we speak, but one thing is certain: If Marcus Hook wasn’t born with the refinery, it doesn’t have to die with it either.
• Official selection at Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival, Taos Shortz

And, if you missed them over the last couple of months, you can also still stream:

► If Only I Were That Warrior [2015]:
• English: https://vimeo.com/126410724
• Italian: https://vimeo.com/115709911

► Iom Romì (A Day in Rome) [2017]

Redfish

Our latest project on the coronavirus crisis in NYC is now out on Redfish.

It's a report on the critical role mutual aid networks have played providing people with what they need to survive, all while government continues to fall short in fulfilling that responsibility. Watch the full video below.

Thank you to North Bronx Collective, Bushwick Mutual Aid, Mil Mundos, Dean Spade, Assembly Member Harvey Epstein, and to Myrna and Guadalupe.

Produced in collaboration with Mediakite.

As New York has become the epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic, a class divide has been exposed showing that we're not all on the same boat in capitalism.

To step up where the government has been lacking, grassroots organizers at mutual aid groups have taken matters into their own hands to help and unite poor and vulnerable people to survive.

Special thanks to Mediakite and Awen Films.

As the only cultural group in the city that can claim an uninterrupted line of descent from the times of the empire, Roman Jews have fostered rituals and traditions that are unique in the world. From dawn to dusk, through the voices of several characters living and working in the historic Ghetto quarter, Iom Romì tells the story of a community both fiercely independent and distinctly Roman.'

Scientists for Palestine

It was a pleasure to collaborate with Scientists for Palestine and document the 'Third international gathering for science in Palestine' at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) -- check our latest mini-documentary to learn about the work that is being done to support science in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Scientists for Palestine is an international organisation created by and for scientists to promote science and support the integration of the occupied Palestinian territories in the international scientific community.

For more information: scientists4palestine.com

The Third International Meeting for Science in Palestine was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, from January 10th through 12th, 2020. The third international meeting aimed to escalate and refine plans toward Scientists for Palestine’s primary objectives of advancing science in Palestine and integrating Palestinian sciences into the international scientific community by: enhancing collaboration between Scientists in Palestine and exile with key partners globally; highlighting Palestinian scientists and scientific development; and devising measurable goals toward these ends. The international meeting provides space to access information about the challenges and successes of Palestinians practicing and researching science under occupation while also providing concrete opportunities for international scientists to get involved. A working group track ran to help develop enhanced strategies to identify mechanisms for sustained international collaboration with and elevation of Palestinian scientists.

The meeting saw the historic participation of a delegation of nine Palestinian scientists traveling to Boston from Palestine as well as presentations from other young and established scientists from around the world, including 2018 Chemistry Nobel Prize winner George Smith, MacArthur fellow Astrophysicist Nergis Mavalvala, and renowned Palestinian medic and innovator Dr. Tarek Loubani.

Special thanks to Awen Films for this incredible work!

For a decade, Bushwick has been a hotbed of gentrification, with the highest rent increases in the city. Now, an impending rezoning threatens to accelerate the process and put an even greater strain on the community.

In Ep. 6 of The Battle for New York, we talked with
Mi Casa No Es Su Casa: Illumination Against Gentrification about their #BattleforBushwick struggle and their strategies for defending the neighborhood from predatory developers.
