Tradeswomen Tuesday: Beth “Glo” Beattie, Ironworker

As part of an externship with the Equal Rights Advocates (ERA), a non profit women's rights organization, each student in our class has interviewed individual Tradeswomen and written blog posts to share the women’s stories as a part of the ERA'a Tradeswomen Tuesday (TWT) blog campaign. And we are finally ready to unveil the first of our ongoing TWT blog posts!

Below you can find the TWT post, a profile on Beth "Glo" Beattie, an Ironworker, which was written by Lindsey Altongy. Make sure to let us know what you think in the comments below!

by Lindsey Altongy “I would absolutely recommend the trades to women looking for a job option. It is definitely a viable career. Look at me: I’m doing it! The world has to change to fit us in!” says Beth “Glo” Beattie, an ironworker from Florida, who now lives in Minnesota. Glo’s story demonstrate…

Today, we had the opportunity to meet with the social media team at Aeropostale. This was a really cool experience for the class because for such a big company, they are represented on social media by only 3 employees. At this visit we learned how there are so many different channels of media that can be taken advantage of. The team taught us to always create a conversation on social media, in order to engage our audience and make them feel like they are not just another consumer. Consumers want to feel like an individual, and if that happens, result in repeated purchases! What was interesting here was that the senior executives do not really interfere with the social media team since they have so much confidence in them and know that they will do their hardest work. If we could relay one point of information from that trip, it would be to never post the same information on different channels at the same time. The team explained how consumers are following all of the different channels, and the more variety the better! Check out their girl at www.instagram.com/aeropostale, or like them on facebook! This was another successful visit in Manhattan.

Today we had the opportunity to visit with a company nearby our school, SmithSolve. We did not go into New York City, but we were able to find a company that is accessible for those who do not desire to work in New York City. SmithSolve is a healthcare PR firm located in Morristown, New Jersey. We learned that their company first started off as a day-to-day consultant, and eventually became an agency. SmithSolve communicates their values, inspires their action, and everything that you learn, you need to apply on the job. This company creates relationships with people they would have never created relationships with before, and they love every second of it. SmithSolve does a lot of branding, including redesigning websites (Alexion for example!), social media, and editing. Through their empathy and compassion, each employee at this company is really dedicated to their job. Check them out at www.smithsolve.com!

Here is a quick look back to our first onsite experience at Peppercomm. At the award winning communication and marketing firm, students had the pleasure of learning from the welcoming Peppercomm employees. Topics ranged from analyzing business outcomes, to understanding PR vernacular like B2B and they even advised students on how to create an outstanding internship application. Peppercomm was also voted one of the top places to work in PR in 2014 by PRNews. Good to know! Thanks Peppercomm!
