Make a Wish / I'll Never Make a Frenchman Out of You

YES, I DO TAKE REQUESTS! Here is an excerpt from MAKE A WISH, a forgotten musical which starred Nanette Fabray and featured one of my favorite musical theatre performers Helen Gallagher. Neither of these ladies ever got the first rate star vehicle they deserved, but Helen still managed to win two Tonys. Quiz question: What was the name of Helen Gallagher's starring role that received a gender switch in the film adaption? Hint: The role in the film was played by Jerry Lewis!

Sail Away - 01 "Come to Me"

This week's entry, a song from Noel Coward's valentine to Elaine Stritch. Not a long run, and only a little longer run in London, but we have two cast recordings preserving the witty score and Stritch's performance. Enjoy...

Olivier Awards 2012 - Sarah Lancashire peforming "Nobody" from Betty Blue Eyes

This is a personal favorite of mine. Touching, well-crafted, underrated, Olivier Award winner...BETTY BLUE EYES, based on a film that starred Maggie Smith called "A PRIVATE FUNCTION". This number is irresistible ...although it has been produced regionally, it has never made it to Broadway. This is a real show tune--enjoy!

You Have Made Me Love

This week's entry is a gorgeous song from the Anthony Burgess/Michael J. Lewis musical version of CYRANO. The show had a disappointingly short run but Christopher Plummer's portrayal of the title role was magnificent and earned him a Tony. This song was the capper of a beautiful balcony scene and remains a favorite of fans of this score.

JEEVES - Original London Cast 1975

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K18Gv6qqLIU
This week’s entry holds a special place in my heart, because I was in the Broadway cast the revised version of this show, BY JEEVES. The original version entitled JEEVES ran in London’s West End for a scant 38 performances in 1975. The show we now know as BY JEEVES emerged almost two decades later in 1996 and finally opened on Broadway in 2001. The cast recording of the original West End version only barely resembles the new show and has been long out of print, never released on CD. I am pleased to share this rare recording.

Pickwick - 1963 Original London Cast

FROM MY PAGE "David Edwards' Musical Theatre Archives"
To paraphrase Dolly Levi, "show music is like manure...it does no good unless it is spread around encouraging little things to grow."
Those who know me and my song search service know that I have a library of literally thousands of musical theatre recordings, many of them very obscure and out-of-print. I have decided to do weekly posts featuring some gems I have in my collection.
This week’s entry is PICKWICK. Based on Dickens’ “Pickwick Papers,” with a score by Cyril Ornadel and Leslie Bricusse, it was a hit in London’s West End and spawned a hit song “If I Ruled the World.” Harry Secombe starred and subsequently, David Merrick produced a version, again starring Secombe for Broadway. The show holds a unique place in Broadway history in that it made back its investment on an extensive pre-Broadway tour and then, after luke-warm reviews and slow box office, folded on Broadway after only 56 performances., still a hit if only in the monetary sense. A Broadway cast album was never made. Here is the long out-of-print London Cast Recording. Enjoy!

The Sap of Life

Those who know me and my song search service know that I have a library of literally thousands of musical theatre recordings, many of them very obscure and out-of-print. I have decided to do weekly posts featuring some gems I have in my collection. Today's entry is the long out-of-print Original Cast Recording of THE SAP OF LIFE, a 1961 Off-Broadway musical by Maltby and Shire. The sound quality may not be the best, but the material is first rate. If a couple of the songs sound familiar it's because they were recycled into the revues STARTING HERE, STARTING NOW and CLOSER THAN EVER. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWm75hERVo8&t=71s
