Dear Friends - You are invited on Friday, September 19th, at 6:30pm to NYC Friends of Clearwater's night of live music, potluck dinner, and environmental discussions and announcements. Join us! We have a great time!

Environmental presentation:
UPROSE is one of the organizations with actions during this United Nations Climate week--September 21-28. Increasingly corporations use this week to do their greenwashing--we'll tell you what grassroot organizations are doing.

Ahmad Perez is the Infrastructure Coordinator at UPROSE. Ahmad was one of the youngest White House Appointees in the Biden-Harris Administration, formerly serving as the Special Advisor for Implementation and Climate Justice at the United States Environmental Protection Agency. UPROSE is a community-based organization that advocates for climate justice, environmental justice, and sustainability in Sunset Park and beyond.

We will share with you about what other organizations are doing as well. We invite you to bring announcements.

Report back:
Hudson River Sloop Clearwater 2nd Annual Folk Picnic was September 6.

One great thing about having our 3rd Friday night gatherings in person is that we have resumed our pot-lucks! Bring food and drinks to share! We encourage folks to bring your own utensils and reusable dishes but there will be plates and utensils supplied.

Clearwater is Pete Seeger's legacy and was founded in the spirit and practice of the arts and activism, so all are welcome to play, sing and hang out with us. Join in with your instruments, your voices, your poetry, or whatever you would like to share! It will be helpful if musicians let us know ahead of time that you would like to participate.

Our monthly gatherings take place at Judson Memorial Church, an organization which shares our vision of social and environmental justice, and activism through the arts.

Location: Judson Memorial Church Assembly Hall, 239 Thompson Street, Assembly Hall (lower level) bet. 3rd & 4th Streets, just south of Washington Square. It’s in the basement, so please ring the bell and we’ll buzz you in.
Subway Info: A,B,C,D,E,F,M to West 4th Street station (at 6th Ave); N, R to 8th Street station (at Broadway); 1 to Christopher Street station (at 7th Avenue).

Our NYC Friends of Clearwater gatherings were on Zoom for several years and we will still have a basic Zoom link at our in-person meetings for those who wish to join that way. We still want our friends from further away to be able to join us! We hope to have a better hybrid set-up in the future--If anyone has a skill-set in that area your assistance would be appreciated.

LABOR & ENVIRONMENT UNITED
A CELEBRATION OF LABOR DAY

This episode of Eco-Logic celebrates the alliances between Labor and environmental activists. Industry has spent a lot of time and money to say that doesn't happen, but that is a myth. We show you that networking of environmental groups and organized labor is happening and always has been.

You'll hear details about that unity from our guests:
-Steve Ongerth is from the Environmental Unionism Caucus of the Industrial Workers of the World. The IWW, whose members are nicknamed "Wobblies", has been growing steadily since Occupy Wall Street and
-Bakari Height is a Transit Equity Organizer of Labor Network for Sustainability. Public transit is one of the best and most obvious links of Labor and Environmentalism.

It’s often claimed that environmentalists and labor are on opposite sides, but if you look deeper, that is usually not the case. Corporate interests use that perceived division to put profit over people, but in reality when the groups talk together, they find they have common interests. Many industries use clichés that they themselves have created to try to make organized labor and organized environmental groups into enemies. We'll shine a light on ways those clichés are simply not true and never have been. What may be good for profit may not be good for people - for the workers. Bargaining for the common good incudes healthy air and water.

As mentioned on last week's show, public transit provides a natural and clear benefit for increasing jobs and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and could have saved many lives in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

When an economic downturn disrupted the logging industry and the unions were busted, activist Judi Bari noticed commonalities with issues brought up by both loggers and environmentalists. Judi was a hero to people who know of her. Long-time listeners may remember when she was one of the people we highlighted on a show about women and the environment.

We’ll tell you about what is really responsible for the job loss that industry blames on environmentalism.
You'll hear about some of the rallies of organized Labor and environmental activists.
All polluting industries use the same playbook blaming others for the damage they cause.
Environmentalists walked the picket lines of UAW, who wanted and got some environmental clauses in the new contracts.

We'll talk about how environmental racism and class consciousness are used as wedges to divide environmentalists and labor.
Environmental issues are used as a scapegoat for lay-offs, just as Trump uses DEI now.
We'll discuss why labor unions are important for society and the environment.

Wind farms are a potential uniting force of Labor and Environmentalists.
Why is "Green Unionism" growing?
We can't continue with business as usual.
As our guest Steve said, "There's a lot of hope if people know where to look for it."

We open the show with news: record heat and humidity in the eastern U.S., western Monarch butterflies in danger of extinction, and healthy diets for honeybees.

Our song this week could have been written for this episode of Eco-Logic, "Blue and Green," written and sung by Sharon Abreu.
