Today we were live with Cinematographer Matt Porwoll! Some of Matt's work includes: "Once Upon a Time in Uganda," "Tiger," "By The People: The Election of Barack Obama," and the Oscar-nominated "Cartel Land."

Matt Porwoll is an Emmy® award-winning cinematographer based in New York. His work has screened theatrically, appeared on TV networks such as Discovery, Showtime, HBO, CNN, A&E, and PBS, as well as online outlets including Vogue, Glamour, Wired, Teen Vogue and W Magazine. Recently, Porwoll shot the film "Tigerland," directed by Academy Award®-winner Ross Kauffman, that premiered in competition at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and garnered a 2020 Cinema Eye Honors nomination for Best Broadcast Cinematography. Porwoll also served as the series cinematographer on Showtime’s "The Trade: Season 1," a 5-part documentary series about the opioid epidemic. The feature documentary "Cartel Land," which Matt shot and co-produced, won Best Cinematography Awards at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival, 2016 Cinema Eye Honors and 2016 Primetime Emmys. The film was also nominated for an Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature.

Porwoll has served as an additional cinematographer on numerous other films including "City of Ghosts," and "Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare," directed by Academy Award®-nominated director Matthew Heineman, HBO’s Emmy®-nominated "By The People: The Election of Barack Obama," and HBO’s "Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1," which won the 2015 Academy Award® for Best Documentary Short.

In addition to working as a cinematographer, Matt enjoys sharing the technical side of the craft as well. Whether its covering topics such as cameras, lenses and lighting on his blog or collaborating with manufacturers about working with their equipment, teaching and sharing his experiences has been a rewarding complement to his work.

Join us for a discussion with Colorist Andrea Chlebak to go behind the scenes of her work and discuss her career path. Andrea is currently a Senior Colorist at Harbor Picture Company

Andrea Chlebak, has spent the past 16 years honing her skills as a colorist for major studios and indies alike.

Canadian-born, Chlebak’s recent work has included supervising color for Seth Rogen’s “An American Pickle” for HBOMax, as well as collaborating for a third time with award-winning cinematographer Gregory Middleton ASC to supervise color for Netflix’s feature “A Babysitter’s Guide to Monsterhunting”.

Starting out as a graphic artist and photographer, then editor and compositor, the opportunity to become a colorist in 2006 was a turning point for Chlebak. Her multi-disciplinary background has spanned features, docu-series and commercials. Major credits include Hollywood studio films such as Neill Blomkamp’s “Elysium” and “Chappie”, as well as award-winning indies “Mandy” and “Prospect”. Her career has taken her to some of the industry’s leading post-production houses including Deluxe, EFILM, Encore, Company3, and Digital Film Central.

Adept at collaborating with directors, cinematographers, visual effects supervisors and editors to develop and refine the final look and feel for a film, her approach, “Adds clarity and dimension to the creative experience and unearths beautifully polished images” says Chlebak, “I like to bring an artistic sensibility and technical rigor to all of my projects.”

Based out of Harbor’s LA post-production facility, Andrea Chlebak is available to filmmakers worldwide.

Oscar-nominated and veteran Editor Kevin Tent, ACE joined Filmmaker U to talk about his illustrious career from his start under Roger Corman, through his multiple films with acclaimed Director Alexander Payne.

Kevin began his career editing educational films, then moved into the world of low-budget horror films, working on several projects with legendary producer Roger Corman. Tent has since gone on to edit many high-profile films. He is known for his long-standing partnership with filmmaker Alexander Payne on films such as "Nebraska," "The Descendants," "Sideways," and "Election." Tent has been nominated for an Academy Award for best editing for "The Descendants" and won an ACE Eddie award for the same film and received three other ACE Eddie Award nominations for "Election," "Sideways" and "About Schmidt."
