The Vietnam War: A film by Ken Burns & Lynn Novick

And the Emmy goes to…The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns & Lynn Novick

“The Vietnam War” tells the story of one of the most consequential, divisive and controversial events in American history. The series explores the human dimensions of the war through testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sides – Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam. The filmmakers conducted extensive archival and historical research over a period of ten years in more than a dozen countries. For the first time since the war ended, as new records were released in the United States and Vietnam, it was possible to present this story as a multi-dimensional conflict—not just a struggle between North and South Vietnam, or between Americans and communists, but a war that divided each country against itself, and one for which there was no easy path to victory on the battlefield or at the negotiating table.

Winner of the Emmy Award for Outstanding Research. Presented October 1, 2018, at the 39th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards.
