Reel Peak Films is pleased to present the World Premiere of #TANTURA, directed by Alon Schwarz (Aida’s Secret) and produced by Shaul Schwarz (Trophy, Immigration Nation) and Maiken Baird, at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. An exploration of Israel’s founding myth and the country’s inability to come to terms with its dark past, the film will be shown as the Day One presentation of the festival’s World Cinema Documentary Competition.

The tape-recorded words “erase it” take on new weight in the context of history and war. When the State of Israel was established in 1948, war broke out and hundreds of Palestinian villages were depopulated in its aftermath. Israelis know this as the War of Independence. Palestinians call it “Al Nakba” (the Catastrophe). In the late 1990s, graduate student Teddy Katz conducted research into a large-scale massacre that had allegedly occurred in the village of Tantura in 1948. His work later came under attack and his reputation was ruined, but 140 hours of audio testimonies remain.

Director Alon Schwarz revisits former Israeli soldiers of the Alexandroni Brigade as well as Palestinian residents in an effort to re-examine what happened in Tantura and explore why the Nakba is taboo in Israeli society. The ex-soldiers, now in their 90s, recall unsettling acts of war while disquietly pausing at points they either don’t remember or won’t speak of. Audio from Katz’s 20-year-old interviews cuts through the silence of self-preservation and exposes the ways in which power, silencing, and protected narratives can sculpt history.

When deportation officer Sam (pictured above) was asked if he’s ever felt sorry for deporting illegal immigrants, he says “Nope...I still haven’t been able to have somebody tell me the logical reasons why they did it the illegal way knowingly knowing there’s a legal way to do it.” #ImmigrationNation is a new 6-part documentary series that explores the not-so-well-oiled machine that is the immigration/deportation “system" in the United States — only on @Neflix TOMORROW!

"Separation of families is the worst punishment you can give a parent" says Deborah Jane, A resettled Ugandan refugee and acid attack survivor. Debrah did it the right way, she followed our immigration laws. Upon being resettled in the United States she filed a following to join application for her children so they could join her in the US. But, like thousands of other refugee families their paperwork got stuck in "administrative processing" leaving their families separated. In the bottom picture Debrah hugs her children for the first time in 4 years, after deciding to go to Kenya to see them. Top picture shows three fathers who have been separated from their children during zero tolerance policy time and detained at the El Paso Processing Center in El Paso, Texas. With unprecedented access to ICE, Immigration nation will show for the first time how children's separation looks like from inside the system. #ImmigrationNation on @netflix August 3rd!

Deported Veteran Cesar pleads with the staff of New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham asking her to pardon him of a marijuana charge that got him deported 8 years ago. "My mom brought me to the US when I was 2 years old. Man what a great nation to pick us up and give us shelter, that's the country I want to be a part of. And I always heard that freedom ain't free, freedom is built on the blood of patriots. I wanted my blood to be part of that. I am ok to die for this country but not ok to live in it. That's kind of bullsh*t" says Cesar.

In three years of documenting the immigration system there was one thing everyone from all political spectrums agreed on, our system is broken. Can we all agree on not deporting those who have served our country?

Meet Berta, a 63-year-old grandmother whose life was threatened by MS13 gang members after she refused to let them take and marry off her 12-year-old granddaughter. The two fled their home country to seek asylum in the U.S. Berta followed our immigration laws seeking asylum in a port of entry, yet Berta was separated from her granddaughter and detained for 17 months in ICE custody. Berta's story is featured in our episode "The right way".

This episode dissects the systems that are in place for entering the United States legally and how they continue to be dismantled — even for the most vulnerable and those who are trying to follow immigration rules and do it the right way.

A Rare Look Inside Trump’s Immigration Crackdown Draws Legal Threats

In early 2017, as Immigration and Customs Enforcement prepared to carry out the hard-line agenda on which President Trump had campaigned, agency leaders jumped at the chance to let two filmmakers give a behind-the-scenes look at the process.

But as the documentary neared completion in recent months, the administration fought mightily to keep it from being released until after the 2020 election.

A new documentary peers inside the secretive world of immigration enforcement. The filmmakers faced demands to delete scenes and delay broadcast until after the election.

With the docuseries set to debut on Aug. 3 on Netflix, it may be too late to put the cat back in the bag. But filmmakers...

ICE pushes back against release of upcoming Netflix docuseries

With the docuseries set to debut on Aug. 3 on Netflix, it may be too late to put the cat back in the bag. But filmmakers Christina Clusiau and Shaul Schwarz told the New York Times that after turning over drafts to ICE leadership, as per a contract the two parties had negotiated in 2017, federal officials began pushing back, seeking to delay publication and veto scenes.

The filmmakers of the upcoming docuseries “Immigration Nation” were granted “unprecedented access” to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, capturing controversial and even illegal scenes on camera. Now, Trump administration officials want to take it back, the New York T...

Reasonless Persecution of Me...

John Hume, world's largest rhino breeder and the man who bred 1000 rhinos. He is one of the subjects in our upcoming film TROPHY that will be in theaters this September. John advocates to trim the rhino's horn to protect them from poachers.Horn grows back. He advocates to sell the horn to put money back into the project. A controversial solution, maybe, but when the world is loosing over 1000 rhinos a year to poaching perhaps a rhino without a horn, for the time being, is a solution we should, also, advocate for. @trophythefilm #trophythefilm
