Douglas F4D Skyray (later designated F-6 Skyray) a delta wing carrier capable fighter aircraft.

First flight of the Skyray was January 23rd, 1951. Introduction to fleet service was 5 years later in 1956. 422 were built and she would serve the USN/ USMC until retirement in 1964.

Convair YB-60 an experimental prototype jet bomber built for the United States Air Force.

Initially submitted as a proposal by Convair to the USAF as an all jet swept wing version of the B-36 it was initially dubbed the B-36G, however it was so different from the B-36 that the new designation of YB-60 was selected.

The YB-60 was unofficially in competition with the Boeing YB-52 Stratofortress, the YB-60 did have several things going for it. Firstly the YB-60 was based off an existing design and would be cheaper than Boeing's aircraft. Secondly the YB-60 had a substantially larger payload of 72,000 lb (33,000 kg) versus 43,000 lb (20,000 kg) for the Boeing design. Unfortunately for the YB-60 however the YB-52 was over 100 MPH (160 km/h) faster than Convair's entry and this was a shortcoming that could not be overlooked by the USAF. The Boeing YB-52 developed into the B-52 Stratofortress (entering service in February 1955) and is still in service to this day.

Despite both prototype YB-60s being accepted by the USAF only one ever flew and they were eventually scrapped for B-36 Peacemaker parts, as the aircraft shared a 72% parts commonality with the Peacemaker. Another tragedy to us aviation history buffs to add to the long sad list!
