I’ve noticed a lot of people saying “I’m coming to NYC! What should I do?” Do yourself a favor: before you ask questions, do some research on your own to plan this out yourself, as it will force you to learn the areas of Manhattan (and hopefully other boroughs) and how to get around. Study a map of NYC as the first thing you do. This will help you with orienting yourself when using the subway and when walking. Also: think hard about whether you’re doing something for the photos/to say you’ve done it or if you’re doing it because it really interests you and you want a full experience. I see so many people over-schedule their trips so that they don’t have time to truly experience anything fully (I was guilty of this on my first trip.) NYC is meant to be savored! 😀

In NYC until Wednesday. Long shot. Does anyone know where the street vendor that paints onto canvas is situated just now? This is his work bought a couple of years ago.

We’re off to NYC this SATURDAY for a week-long adventure! Staying at Hotel Chelsea and super excited. We’ve got two nights of theatre planned (The Lion King and Harry Potter), plus a harbor cruise one evening.
Our days are pretty packed, but I’m trying to figure out what to do at night with a 10-year-old! Blue Note probably isn’t his vibe, Brooklyn Bowl and Puttery Mini Golf are 21+ in the evenings (which makes sense!), but I’d love to do something after dinner instead of just heading back to the hotel.
Any fun nighttime ideas that work for kids? Thanks!! 😊

Hello all, are there many architecture fans in the group? I’m hoping to visit New York this year with my family (kids are 20 & 18) and I love the look of the John Portman-designed Marriott Marquis (pictured).
Does anyone have other recommendations of interesting places to stay? I guess I’d rather save on accommodation to maximise spending money, but having said that, the architecture can be part of the experience too, so willing to look at all great suggestions. Thank you.

PS I’m not necessarily wedded to the idea of staying in/near Times Square.

I tried to search in the group before asking. But has anyone went to the Louis Vuitton Cafe and sat at the bar? I have read on other platforms that you can wait in line for bar seats. We are going to be in town 4/8-4/9 with it being during the week wasn’t sure is that would help with flow of business. thanks for any tips.
Photo so I don’t get lost 💕

One week home after the best trip to an amazing city picked up so many tips off this group JFK into New York used the air train then onto the LIRR and finally onto the subway brought us right out across the street from our hotel the New Yorker rooms are small but really it’s not like you’ll be spending long in the room with so much to see and do we are already planning on going back so much we didn’t get to do ticked a few off the list anyone going a couple of destinations to definitely do The Edge blows all the other rooftop views out of the water 9/11 museum amazing spent almost 3 hours in it and only left because it was closing. Subways definitely the way to get about. We used the Go City app and pre booked what spots we wanted to go to another definite is the Brooklyn Bridge and Dumbo walking tour our guide Kyle was brilliant

Thank you New York.

Aussie family of 4. Visited 7-27 December. Visited all the Burroughs. We did one ‘attraction’ a day and then let the city lead us. Loved every day. So much of the city was familiar (from TV/movies etc) that it felt like visiting an old friend. Locals were friendly and extremely patient given the huge numbers of visitors.

It’s a city that leaves an imprint on you. Already contemplating our next visit.

Our Top 10 tips for fellow Aussies (and other visitors):

1. Take two pairs of comfy shoes and alternate.
2. Forget about coffee as you know it. You’ll come to love black coffee with cream and a powdered product called ‘half & half’.
3. It will be busy. Be patient. Allow extra time. Appreciate the locals - they are very tolerant of visitors.
4. It’s expensive. Our exchange rate doesn’t help. Budget accordingly.
5. Tipping is unnatural and confusing to us, but you’ll get the hang of it. We set some ‘rules’ to make it easier eg 20%, for sit down table service. For over the counter service, we often left our loose change, similar to how we would put loose change into the tip jar on the counter at home.
6. Use the subway. It’s cheap, efficient, clean, safe. Know if you’re going ‘uptown’ or ‘downtown’ before entering the station.
7. Take a bag with you for rubbish. Bins were far between and often overflowing.
8. Shop for souvenirs in Chinatown (Canal Street subway). 1/3 TS prices and the same stock. You can also haggle.
9. We used TodayTix or went directly to the theatre for theatre tickets. The line up for the TS ticket booth was next level so we avoided it.
10. Allow for rest days/half days and sleep ins. You’ll enjoy the city more if you’re refreshed.

We took hundreds of photos but rather than post the same familiar landmarks that everyone shares, I thought I’d share my favourite. My oldest daughter is asleep. She and the two random New Yorkers, are all leaning on my youngest daughter (pink beanie) who said she could feel the weight of all three people leaning on her but didn’t mind, as all three clearly needed to rest. 😴

See you next time New York.

Headed to nyc soon and was hoping for recommendations on fun things to do that aren’t eating or drinking (or if you have any fun eats and drinks) ! I’ve been multiple times so not necessarily looking for the super touristy stuff. More unique things to the city or must do’s. Etc events, markets, crafts! Any thing you consider a must see/do! Thank you in advance!!!

Also… absolute fav coffee shop for the BEST lattes?? Big latte girl and have yet to find a fav!

Xx

Photo so this doesn’t get lost ✨ I know there’s many posts like this but was hoping for a refreshed list!
