Thank you New York.
Aussie family of 4. Visited 7-27 December. Visited all the Burroughs. We did one ‘attraction’ a day and then let the city lead us. Loved every day. So much of the city was familiar (from TV/movies etc) that it felt like visiting an old friend. Locals were friendly and extremely patient given the huge numbers of visitors.
It’s a city that leaves an imprint on you. Already contemplating our next visit.
Our Top 10 tips for fellow Aussies (and other visitors):
1. Take two pairs of comfy shoes and alternate.
2. Forget about coffee as you know it. You’ll come to love black coffee with cream and a powdered product called ‘half & half’.
3. It will be busy. Be patient. Allow extra time. Appreciate the locals - they are very tolerant of visitors.
4. It’s expensive. Our exchange rate doesn’t help. Budget accordingly.
5. Tipping is unnatural and confusing to us, but you’ll get the hang of it. We set some ‘rules’ to make it easier eg 20%, for sit down table service. For over the counter service, we often left our loose change, similar to how we would put loose change into the tip jar on the counter at home.
6. Use the subway. It’s cheap, efficient, clean, safe. Know if you’re going ‘uptown’ or ‘downtown’ before entering the station.
7. Take a bag with you for rubbish. Bins were far between and often overflowing.
8. Shop for souvenirs in Chinatown (Canal Street subway). 1/3 TS prices and the same stock. You can also haggle.
9. We used TodayTix or went directly to the theatre for theatre tickets. The line up for the TS ticket booth was next level so we avoided it.
10. Allow for rest days/half days and sleep ins. You’ll enjoy the city more if you’re refreshed.
We took hundreds of photos but rather than post the same familiar landmarks that everyone shares, I thought I’d share my favourite. My oldest daughter is asleep. She and the two random New Yorkers, are all leaning on my youngest daughter (pink beanie) who said she could feel the weight of all three people leaning on her but didn’t mind, as all three clearly needed to rest. 😴
See you next time New York.
