BECOMING A WRITER; A Memoir & Workbook by Carol Bergman

© copyright by Carol Bergman 2020

Anyone can publish these days but how do we know when we have written something worthwhile? Where is our audience and why would this imagined audience want to read what we have written? Does it matter? Shall we continue writing regardless of financial success, recognition, or pandemics? What does it mean to be a writer, to follow the path of admired writers, and to lead a sustainable writing life? In Becoming a Writer, Carol Bergman, an award winning writer and writing teacher, answers these questions. She has been teaching writing workshops at Gotham Writers Workshop and NYU since 1997, and has many inspiring and useful ideas for both mentors and aspiring writers.

A Campaign Targeting Our Staff | The New York Times Company

Good Morning Writers, Students, Former Students, Friends of Writers, Friend of Mediacs. In lieu of a blog post this morning--and there are recent ones to read here--I am re-posting a message from the publisher of the NY Times. It is our mandate as writers, reporters and publishers to take heed: our free press is under attack. Our response to such an attack can only be more "speech," not less. Speak boldly. Write boldly. Persist. Resist.

A note to staff by New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger calling attention to a Times story about a campaign led by President Trump’s allies intended to harass and embarrass individuals affiliated with several leading news organizations.

Publicity uses a different side of a writer's brain, a different kind of creativity. Apart from entering a copy editor's changes, it's not my favorite part of the process albeit necessary. A press release to The New Paltz Times resulted in a flattering photo and a two page spread.

With thanks to reporter Sharyn Flanagan who read most of the book before our interview and is a "real" reporter who asks interesting questions, and Lauren Thomas, experienced photographer, who was sensitive to the light and to her subject--the digital camera does not lie--and showed me all the images before we agreed on this one. Both of these women--who I saw on two separate days--made my day.

Local folks: Join me at Inquiring Minds Bookstore on Thursday, June 13th @ 7 p.m for a reading and Q & A.

In this expanded edition of SAY NOTHING, rookie Private Investigator Alison Jenkins, recently returned from deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan to her home in Ulster County, NY, teams up with her mentor, PI Margaret Singer, to solve the disappearance of a decorated veteran. Not far into the investigation, the detectives realize that the young man’s disappearance is only one of several related crimes committed in their jurisdiction and that the FBI has taken a controlling interest in the case and invoked the Patriot Act. When David’s girlfriend and a young Iranian girl are found murdered, the case becomes even more complex. At each turn in the investigation, the sense of danger intensifies. A political thriller, a murder mystery, and a meditation on the futility of war, SAY NOTHING will twist its way into your psyche and not let go.

Mediacs is pleased to announce the publication of Vasu Varadhan's memoir, "On My Own Terms."

After Professor Varadhan lost her older son, Gopal, in the September 11 attacks on The World Trade Center, colleagues at NYU referred to her as the Indian woman in the sari who lost her child. In moments of quiet despair and unexpected alienation, she thought of her father, a United Nations diplomat, who died at the early age of fifty-one, having spent the better part of his life championing the cause of nuclear disarmament during the Cold War period only to lose a grandson he would never know existed to an act of terrorism. She thought of her mother, her extended Indian family, her childhood in New York, her young adulthood in India, and her arranged marriage at the age of sixteen. Circling back into her own past, she decided to write a memoir to better understand her life, her joys and sorrows, and her profound loss.

Mediacs is pleased to announce the publication of "Where's Paulo?" by Paul Rowbottom, our first travel book. With thanks to Chloe Art and Design for a beautiful cover.

Cut adrift by the sudden and unexpected breakup of his 17-year marriage in 2006, British-born chemist Paul Rowbottom took up employment at Pfizer’s New York City headquarters. Nine years later, when the company offered him a generous severance package, he took the money and ran. Literally! Paul started traveling extensively throughout the Americas, Europe, Southeast Asia and the North Pacific Ocean.

Whenever possible, Paul combines his love of travel with his passion for keeping super fit. His sightseeing trips usually involve biking, hiking and skiing up and down mountains or through rough terrain, running marathons with his Road Runners Club and Race2Adventure buddies, climbing cave walls, scaling the steep steps of ancient Aztec ruins.

Available in paperback and e-book on November 12th. Stay tuned for news of a launch party and other public appearances.

Mediacs is pleased to announce the publication of SHACHAR & KUTI, a children’s picture book for 5-to-8-year-olds scheduled for release on October 15th. It tells the inspirational story of a 10-year-old Israeli girl’s personal struggle to live with a frightening medical condition. In her book, Shachar also describes her self-affirming response to children who are shocked or uncomfortable when they see her for the first time. Her personal story is an homage to acceptance and tolerance that will appeal to all children.

"I tell them: My spots are not normal, but I am," says Shachar who loves to draw and illustrated the book. "They are part of me, but not all of me. I love my friends. I go to school. I belong to a scout troop. I swim. I’m really just like you!”

From fiction writer and journalist Carol Bergman comes a potpourri of very short stories, aphorisms, anecdotes, verbal snapshots, and mini-essays: The NOMADS TRILOGY, Books 1, 2 & 3 in one volume. Bergman demonstrates her experience as a phrasemaker and storyteller. Like Lydia Davis, her writing is both unique and difficult to classify, yet its cumulative affect in this volume is clear. Humorous, perceptive, precise, wry, sometimes chilling, she writes about life in New York after 9/11, war and peace, love and disappointment, the mundane and the sublime, with deep attention and warmth.

Carol Bergman’s articles, essays, and interviews have appeared in The New York Times, Cosmopolitan, and Salon.com. Her essay, “Objects of Desire” was nominated for the Pushcart Prize; her short stories have appeared in many literary magazines. She is the author of biographies of Mae West and Sidney Poitier, a memoir, Searching for Fritzi, two books of novellas, Sitting for Klimt and Water Baby and two novels, Say Nothing and What Returns to Us. She compiled and edited Another Day in Paradise; International Humanitarian Workers Tell Their Stories, nominated for the J. Anthony Lukas Book Prize. After ten years in London as a journalist and teacher, her work is anchored once again in New York, the city of her birth. She teaches writing at New York University.
