Whitney Hamilton plays Charlotte Berry in The Privateers on - Link in comments - And here she talks about the origins of the tradition “Lowering the Flag to Half Mast”. It is nautical in origin and comes from sailor’s superstition that when someone of importance is killed or died aboard ship the ship’s material flag must be lowered in order for the ‘Invisible flag of death’ to fly higher. It is a sign of mourning, grief, respect and honor for the fallen. This tradition was born about 1612 on the British ship ‘Heart’s Ease’. When the Captain was killed, the crew lowered the flag to half-mast. It eventually made its way into the Navy and then the Military where it was called “lowering the flag to half staff’ - on land. Did you know the term "going broke" has a surprising origin in the British Royal Navy? In 1716, distinguished officers were given expensive dress swords for their service. But if they were ever found guilty of dereliction of duty, their swords would be publicly broken in a humiliating "cashiering ceremony." The officer would not only lose his commission, reputation, and good name—he would be "broke."

Actress Whitney Hamilton who plays Charlotte Berry in our show, "The Privateers" talks about the origins of the idiom "Being in the Doldrums". It is similar to "Feeling Blue" but ever more specific. It is a windless region near the equator where sailing ships would be becalmed remaining stuck with no wind or movement for days and even weeks. Two examples of the many, many sailors and explorers that found themselves stuck in the doldrums: Ferdinand Magellan (1517) and Sir Walter Raleigh (1617). Many died of starvation and dehydration as they ran out of food and water while in this zone. It was a most frightful graveyard and referred to in the classic poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner".

Whitney Hamilton plays Charlotte Berry in our show “The Privateers” and here Actress Whitney Hamilton, talks about origins of the idiom "Flash in the Pan". It references the misfire of a flintlock weapon. This is when the gun powder in the pan ignites but it fails to ignite the load in the barrel and fire a lead ball or shot. It is just a lot of flashy light and smoke. It means something or someone has huge potential but falls flat or falls short of expectations. Flintlocks were not terribly accurate and therefore one might survive the challenge of a duel. The famous duel in US history ended with the death of Alexander Hamilton.
